Hypocrisy is their stock and trade. Our democracy is failing because the voters do not punish them.

Pablo Torres just made a brilliant observation: "With Bukele sitting next to Trump who claims that he is EXPORTING our problems to El Salvador, it is obvious that we are IMPORTING the values of the 'coolest dictator'"

Madisonian democracy is inherently inefficient. Good government is Effective, Transparent and Accountable. Our democracy is endangered because our citizens have dropped the ball, at least partially enabled by disinformation and by lack of civics education. We need a pro-democracy movement!

Symone, you are so right! The confusion over the word "Oligarchy" misses the point. If we citizens cannot devote even 10 minutes to thinking about what it means to have a real democracy, and how damaging oligarchy is, we have lost the battle. Not to say that leaders need to better craft messaging.

You are preaching to the choir, sir. Please gather the few other inspired Dems and any independents with a voice, and present a coherent, coordinated plan of resistance. If the Dem party is still "frozen" (which is how it appears) your leadership with others will drag them along.

They told us this was the intent. We need for the Dems to provide leadership that includes an alternative vision for what the federal budget COULD and SHOULD be.
Why not present a balanced budget that raises taxes on the oligarchs and moves median households to zero tax? I know it's possible.

Democratic government is not meant to be efficient (per the design given to us by the framers). It should first be effective, transparent and accountable - efficiency is a minor virtue.
Dictatorship is efficient, but neither effective, transparent nor accountable.

They have a wide-open opportunity to present an alternative to the austerity that Project 2025 will bring. They COULD have presented a strong, working-class focused agenda for decades, but instead, were sucked into a neoliberal approach that has led us to this point. Please wake up!!

Why don't the Democrats present a Balanced Budget proposal that doesn't rely on austerity for the working class, but rather increased taxes on the oligarchs coupled with cuts to defense? Wouldn't such a plan call the bluff of so-called fiscal conservatives?

of a full-throated agenda that would actually fix some of the systemic problems (some of which would require amendments to the constitution - a much longer term project), but mainly that would address the needs of people where they actually are.

I agree that the Dems' hearts are in mostly the right place, but it appears that they are conditioned to rules of engagement that are out of date. There is not one speck of doubt that Kamala (and Biden) had good ideas, but from my perspective, they (the Dems) have fallen short

I am losing confidence that the Dem. leadership is approaching the present with eyes wide-open. Sitting in the SOTU speech was like watching an execution and observing that the person being executed was probably not guilty.

It's another form of self-loathing. Instead of MAGA, their hats should read, "WANW - we are not worthy."

I agree, but don't you feel that we need a more muscular offense (pre-empting the Trump proposals) with something more democratic and just?

It is past time for every Senate Democrat to vote "No" for every one of Trump's nominations - We are not living in "Normal Order." Scorched Earth is the only legitimate stance.

Please promote the idea of a Shadow Cabinet, as proposed by Timothy Snyder, as a means of presenting positive alternatives to the corrupt proposals we are seeing, and will see more of.

We need substantive policy alternatives. I don't see the Dems taking the initiative and getting ahead of the Trumpists with more attractive proposals; e.g., How about a humane budget, or Immigration policy, or a Foreign policy?

For example, wouldn't the average voter pay attention to a budget/tax proposal that preserved the social safety net, reduced (or even eliminated) income taxes on individuals below say, $250K in annual income, and balanced the budget with increased taxes on the 1%, plus a revived inheritance tax?

We need an organized, loyal opposition, with more than press conferences. Ideally, a Shadow Cabinet as proposed by Timothy Snyder, that presents alternatives that would appeal to a majority of Americans (which shouldn't be hard to do, given the insanity of what the current administration is doing)

Love "A People's Cabinet" for the name of a serious, shadow cabinet.

This is a great idea. The loyal opposition would be in the position of not just saying "No" to Trump's proposals, rather it would be putting forth alternatives, with the narrative to go along.

A suggestion: Velshi had Wiley Nickel, outgoing congressman from NC on, who articulated a "Loyal opposition" strategy that involved appointing a Shadow Cabinet to call out the Mump administration for its policy proposals when needed. I suggest that you have Rep. Nickel on next weekend to elaborate

Loved the idea of a "Shadow Cabinet" as proposed by Rep. Nickel. A loyal opposition is capable of holding the public line against truly bad policies, but designating qualified shadow cabinet posts would allow alternatives to those policies to enter the conversation, even in the current media mix.

Taking time to think - what an unusual thing in our "Instant" world. Besides, in spite of the media and Republican frenzy, Trump would pardon whomever he chooses, regardless of anything Biden does. His mantra is always, "No shame."
