Our teacher read Forster's The Machine Stops and The Old Man and the Boy by Robert Ruark to us when we were 15. Both have stayed with me. We also did Far from the Madding Crowd with the same teacher which is less miserable than a lot of Hardy's stuff but still pretty bleak.
