Our planet is burning and our banks are fuelling the fire. UK high-street banks Barclays, HSBC, Santander, NatWest and Lloyds have funded fossil fuels with $556 billion since 2016. It’s time to go green. Switch to Starling, Nationwide or Triodos. Act now: makemymoneymatter.co.uk

In my city there is one cybertruck and one DIY parody of a cybertruck and the parody truck has become a local celebrity. Meanwhile, I always wish I had some rotten eggs to throw at the tesla whenever I see it.

Fascinating research finds that the expansion of China's high-speed rail played a big role in increasing >electric car< uptake. Cities where high-speed rail arrived first had higher EV purchasing. Authors argue this may be because of HSR's power to reduce range anxiety. www.nber.org/system/files...

New geothermal technologies give cause for hope, maybe apnews.com/article/ener... Major test case for new geothermal technology launches in small German town

Worth repeating: The administration is unilaterally cancelling spending from programs that have been funded by Congress, in agency after agency. This is a direct violation of the Impoundment Act. Yet here we are.

Don’t buy stuff on February 28. Money’s the only thing these dicks understand. #resist

Government of the people, by the people, for the people

Bloomberg Government reports that HUD will fire half its workers and essentially eliminate the research division, PD&R (h/t @pewilliams.bsky.social).

It's not just Google. Guess I'll be giving Organic Maps another try. apnews.com/article/appl... Apple changes Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America on maps

personally I think Kendrick should have looked directly into the camera and changed the lyrics of "Not Like Us" into a political treatise explaining his exact position on both separation of powers and the immortal science of dialectical materialism. missed opportunity tbh

Is there anyone out there that is mapping any delayed or cancelled federal payments ? Would be really interesting to see which towns and cities are going to be hit

My daughter sent me on a quest to find the world's most expensive pencil sharpener last night, and though the 18-carat gold "El Casco" model ($1,233 at editorialist.com/p/18-karat-p...) wins, I think this $5,299.50 listing at Wayfair arguably reeks more of conspicuous consumption:

I'd like my sandwich with extra pronouns please

The new data.gov is pretty... weird. At first it seemed refreshingly straightforward--just a simple search to find any government dataset, but because whoever did this literally just dumped it all in there, and the search algorithm sucks, you can't hone in on what you want.

Apologies for cross-posting to Hacker News, but the comments on this story are almost as wild as the story itself. In reaction to a death cult made up mostly of data scientists gone mad the consensus seems to be that reason itself is to blame 😳 news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4287...

“Bringing down the cost of housing will require a coordinated effort to remove obstacles to construction… we have serious concerns that proposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico will have the opposite effect, by slowing down the domestic residential construction industry.”

I went to the U.S. Census American Community Survey website last night to pull some tables for validating a land use forecast I'm working on in Asheville and found many pages broken or under maintenance. ☹️

I like the Deepseek takeaway in this video: the important point R1's existence makes is that, no, we don't actually have to consume vast amounts of energy in order to have AI bots to chat with youtu.be/o1sN1lB76EA?...

“The left lost the electorate because of it’s culture war” Meanwhile

I just received a stop-work order from HUD on the grant we won at Urban Institute to support our Housing Market Forecaster. This work is designed to identify land-use reform strategies that can assist cities in adding housing supply and improve housing affordability. www.urban.org/projects/hou...

This is grossly irresponsible reporting by the AP. What’s being offered is not a buyout. The deal is if you agree to resign in September you can continue working remotely until then. There is no buyout or severance.

hope the tardigrades on the moon are having a good time

This morning I read that DeepSeek used training data generated from other language models which has companies like OpenAI fuming, and I can't stop thinking about how there's a lesson in there

Wasn't aware this was an option but good for them anyhow! Congrats!

Excellent post

Running some errands in Manhattan and it’s remarkable how light the traffic is even for this time of year. Only if you remember the before can you appreciate the after. Congestion pricing works.

“Terrible things are happening outside. Poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes. Families are torn apart. Men, women, and children are separated. Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared.” Diary of Anne Frank January 13, 1943

Costco shareholders have overwhelmingly rejected an anti-DEI proposal as other U.S. companies retreat from their diversity policies

Trump has deployed active military to help round up migrants and put them into detention camps. The military forced us out of our homes at gunpoint in 1942 because we were considered possibly disloyal Americans. They sent us to internment camps for four years. History is repeating. Pay attention.

I hate to get political on here but I think it's important that we continue to have a habitable planet

It's the 16 year anniversary of when the depressed anthropomorphic bread loaf from German kids TV was abducted by vagrant anarchists who were battling the city over squatting rights! Anarchists posted vid of the loaf expressing solidarity w them. Some feared the bread already had Stockholm syndrome
