I've had a few conversations with ppl in my life about the fact I feel I've been too nice this last decade or so - too averse to direct confrontation in my own interactions, a bit too cowed by civility discourse or whatever.

That might be my full joker moment.
But really, maybe I'm already there in some respect - at least insofar as I'm real tired of the constant need for genuflection to avoid the absolute psychos from wanting/trying to kill me and/or ppl I care about

Yeah, my immediate thought was how highly produced this is - including truly bizarre synth soundscapes that evoke something like a history channel documentary

As someone who at times has been concerned - sometimes irrationally - by the notion that some of my *purchase history* could be weaponized in the future, how blasé some ppl are about *this* has been real wild tbh

This kind of move seems almost indistinguishable from someone trying to make the US into a pariah state in the long run.
Obv would be some time before US position is truly dislodged, but if it goes that far, this kind of thing will be in the unit for the period

The absolute tragedy going from Pete to this clown, good lord

Coheed is one of the few artists I'd willingly pay more than ~$50 to see
Obv this means I don't see a lot of popular artists live

Yeah in this case referring more to pre-reformation clergy anyway
comment in response to

More or less the same story with witch-hunts over time. Even amidst their own misdeeds, the clergy frequently held back the masses from killing a bunch of ppl over dumb shit.

It's so bizarre trying to get in the head of these ppl since I'm basically the opposite
Very annoyed and probably too animated that *more* downtown space isn't properly pedestrianized where I've lived.

Eh, this might be true technically, but in practice i've met plenty of drivers whose English was pretty shaky in practice so it's likely to create a great deal of harm and relative shortages in the workforce when enforced

Honestly not sure how sold I am on *that* framing even, but the AI abundance angle feels like a real dead end, a continuation of the automation/mechanization promise at the turn of the last century, and so 🤷♂️
I won't hold my breath.

fwiw, also seeing 'radical abundance' there in the title reminds me of the importance of defining terms.
Without it, this kind of stuff gets swept up and cross pollinates with the current 'abundance' discourse in explicitly partisan liberal corners

This has long been my biggest issue with it. Ultimately, the evidence didn't seem more compelling than natural spread.
But also, what difference does that make? It seemed to make some very mad at China but with no desire to do anything about the virus itself... very weird

Seems like it would increase the likelihood, but what do I know? 🤷♂️

Lovely when security updates and firmware stops getting pushed for any of these connected TVs
They've confused me too since I've always had 2-3+ devices that can do all of the 'smart device' features - and better - so they often feel superfluous

I have a sling bag and clip a couple roll up Chico bags to it. Only way I've stopped leaving bags at home or even in the car at the store

And I lost the one I had, so yeah ymmv on this one 🤷♂️

Furthermore, there are several collapsible reusable ones available now if you don't care for what the stores hand out

Like Britain *did* destroy a good chunk of agriculture in Egypt to bend it even further toward textile manufacturing
They also tore apart resource sharing schemes in India intended to offset the more acute effects of localized crop failures.
But none of that makes subsistence farming *desirable*
comment in response to

Feels like they took the real phenomena of the British empire tearing down aspects of existing farming practices in favor of more focused commodity production and ran in a truly *wild* direction with it

Huh - I guess poking the bloc of ppl who really want to see you in chains is *a* strategy.
Time will tell if it works out long term, but I do have some doubts 🤔

But also always pretending you're only ever a smolbean

This stuff drives me crazy. ppl close to me genuinely freaked out about before
But when the same ppl who freak out don't seem to care as much about musk's own brain chips, I don't really know what to do with that
Similar things with a general ai distaste but no energy toward Andreesen & co

More or less
With the caveat that I think the cynical mode leaks into everything - otherwise, you *might* be left behind
It's not a fully formed thought, but also seems to play into the very common attitude that engaging in civics meaningfully is *that guy's* problem
comment in response to

Yeah, 'decadence' has been one of mine - it gets overused sometimes, but still has salience I think.
It gives me some understanding at least for the kind of decline that likely *did* affect civs in previous eras - where ppl like my stepdad meant something like 'being too gay' wrt Rome, Greece

I've had conversations about just how *grotesque* this moment is. No meaningful sense of honor, duty, etc - notions that at least ostensibly factored into a conservative worldview historically and I don't think should be entirely thrown out.
comment in response to

Also it might be low hanging fruit on this list, but THE MATRIX!? 🙃
And while *technically* Tolkien and Lewis would be right wing in the most general sense, their own brands of conservatism are wildly different than what's in fashion now

Also had a nightmare assembly from out of states, the company went under so at some point my company inherited - the drawings were messed up the entire time there & flipped btwn imperial and metric
Making sense of that became a specialty for me just to communicate how to customer how to order part

At my last place, we had a single jig to put together a key component used on everything. God help them if that breaks down
Also a single gasket that became nearly impossible to properly source

Yup - I can see ways it ought to improve and pushed further, but I would not be able to get medication now if I didn't have the option to sign up for insurance through the California exchange

It's such a serious issue in California and to think ppl are *this* upset about the idea of a *tall building* is wild
