Lovely Kevin Drum obit from NYT's @risenc.bsky.social: www.nytimes.com/2025/03/14/u...

I'm ready for the comma fight now, fwiw #TeamJason

A few words on journalism, risk and what I actually said.

I had thoughts about copyediting (for a change).

I have two friends, neither of whom are politics reporters but who both work in “the media,” who both told me yesterday that they aren’t even allowed to write or post about Trump with work accounts because describing anything he’s doing objectively would appear “anti-Trump.”

Ah, "strategy" and "showmanship," not "chaos" and "possible illegality"—everything at WaPo is going great!

Doesn't know what AI is, doesn't know what duplicitous means, doesn't know what the CDC does.

This self-styled cross-section--a "small group of six voters" with "diverse political ideologies"--includes what looks like four Trump voters, one third-party voter, one Green Party member who "reluctantly" voted for Harris, and not a single straight-up Democrat.

The passive authoritarian tense

The only thing worse than a raving paranoid homicidal racist transphobic dumbshit is a raving paranoid homicidal racist transphobic dumbshit who can't spell "stolen." And who doesn't know what quotation marks are for. And all the rest.

THERE IS MORE THAN ONE REAL STORY.

Statement on the Trump Administration’s January 20, 2025 Executive Order Targeting Transgender, Intersex, Nonbinary, and Gender-Nonconforming Americans:

it’s hard not to feel disillusioned when reporting all the flagrantly illegal and terrifying things this government is doing somehow doesn’t fully break through to the mainstream. it feels like cable news and corporate media made a deal to convince people to keep calm and carry on.

This is the kind of "lead with the truth, and point out the lies" that we need all the time from every news outlet. Good for @crampell.bsky.social

#copyediting “Fucking A” is an affirmation, and I trust that everyone knows that, and if they didn’t know it they know it now.

The email we just got from the superintendent of the Seattle School District was pretty clear that they will not be following either the immigration or trans student EOs. Proud of you, SPS!

The quality of mercy is not strain’d, It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest: It blesseth him that gives and him that takes. ’Tis mightiest in the mightiest, it becomes The throned monarch better than his crown.

Hell is empty, And all the devils are here.

Upping my gummy game and lots of “VEEP” 🤷‍♀️

Today we learned Republicans don’t believe in DEI or spellcheck.

Zuckerberg was just tired of limits on free speech, that's all

for real: support local journalists working their hardest in LA right now, like the good people at @laist.com

Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post cartoonist Ann Telnaes announces she's quit the paper because her editors wouldn't print a cartoon going after Big Tech and media oligarchs paying tribute to to Trump A new low in mainstream media's post-Trump meltdown anntelnaes.substack.com/p/why-im-qui...

We are issuing a warning about a worsening climate for free press in this country, driven by a right-wing campaign of anti-media threats. The public cannot become informed about the problems facing our country and the efforts to improve or worsen them without robust protections for journalism.

One of the best, most hard-hitting immigration journalists out there

Cormac McCarthy said that semi-colons “have no place in literature.” But he was also a child molester, so not all his ideas were good.

I read this piece on how we need a nonprofit journalistic outlet, and I'm a bit puzzled because... they already exist? What they need is more support! 1. Obviously, I'll start with Bolts: this right here is what we want to do! What we need is for you to become our reader: boltsmag.org/newsletter

in some spaces, it's actually considered rude or abrupt to use a period/other punctuation online netiquette.byu.edu/social/perio... elpaisanoonline.com/opinion/2017...

It’s coordinated. Moms For Liberty is going after books telling immigrant children they belong

This, and also scrub "nonplussed" from existence

A number of my colleagues were laid off yesterday by Vox, the parent company of New York magazine. A GoFundMe has been organized for the workers. “All funds raised will be distributed in equal amounts to all laid-off unit members who opt-in to receive funds.” www.gofundme.com/f/stand-with...

This is so shitty. My heart hurts for all the terrific writers at Thrillist and Eater losing their jobs right before the holidays. :(

I think the person giving that advice is trying to cut down on their potential competition, and should be ignored. Lots of writers debut in their 50s and are writing fruitfully for decades after.
