Donald Trump has reportedly spent $18 million worth of taxpayer money to play golf since his inauguration. This is happening as he slashes the federal workforce, guts funding for vital programs, and tees up major cuts to Medicaid to pay for more tax cuts for the rich. Hello?

Economic forecasts have recently deteriorated under President Trump, reflecting the upheaval from federal layoffs, tariff moves and immigration roundups.

(1/3) It needs repeating: in 1994, Ukraine was persuaded to give up its nuclear weapons to Russia in return for the US, the UK, and Russia guaranteeing Ukraine’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.

Until Thursday afternoon, Hanna Miller focused on protecting whales from oil spills, ship strikes, and fishing gear. While on vacation in Hawaii, the federal biologist opened her work email on her personal phone to find she no longer had a job.

A pod of orcas swam close to shore and amazed onlookers in Seattle by treating the whale watchers to the rare sight of the apex predators hunting a bird.

Dusting off my old Oxford English Dictionary and consulting carefully, I could not find "attack friends and submit to enemies" as a definition of the word "strength."

"Donald Trump and Elon Musk never believed in anyone’s free speech except their own," David A. Graham writes in the Atlantic Daily:

“The party that once prided itself on standing up to Moscow,” Jonathan Lemire writes, “has bowed to a president who himself is bowing to an adversary.”

Senate Republicans have confirmed Trump’s least qualified Cabinet nominees—and given up their role as an independent check on the president. This will encourage Trump, @dgraham.bsky.social writes. And in bowing to him, senators may be defying voters’ preferences.

“The selling out of Ukraine was an inevitable consequence, no doubt, of America’s decision to reëlect Trump.” Susan B. Glasser writes about President Trump’s breathtaking pivot toward Moscow.

Interesting: the State Department’s procurement forecast detailing a $400 million order for "armored Tesla" has now been edited to "armored electric vehicles." The document shows the edit was made tonight at 9:12 p.m. -- after it was highlighted in reports

Outbreaks and high levels of illnesses (like the flu) have become more common as vaccination rates have fallen, especially among children. Washington is among the states hit hardest by the flu.

Breaking News: President Trump is imposing a 25% tariff on foreign steel and aluminum, a move from his first term that ignited trade wars with allies.

Oh it's so encouraging when Russia is applauding what's happening in the US

French TV channel France 2: Orbán has been found to own an undeclared luxurious Austro-Hungarian-era palace worth €45 million. Trying to emulate his idol - Putin?

New — CFPB employees received an ominous email from Russell Vought a few minutes ago. “Employees should stand down from performing any work task.” Full text:

I voted for Trump. But when he said he was going to wreck the economy, I didn’t know that he really meant that he was going to wreck the economy.

“Mark my words. … They are going to basically tell the U.S. Marshals Service, do not enforce any of these orders, we will not obey them, … and, once that happens—I hope it doesn't … but I know in my heart that it will—our 236-year experiment … in American constitutionalism, is over.”

At least $12 *trillion* from global oligarchs is hidden offshore in secret tax havens worldwide. And it is headquartered right here in the USA. Instead of cutting lifesaving programs like the VA, Medicaid, and food stamps, we should be cracking down on tax havens for the ultra-rich.

"If USAID is a secret left-wing plot, leftists themselves have not been let in on the secret. Actual Marxists despise USAID, which they consider a tool of American imperialism." www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

Hope you don't have a medical condition that relies on research of any kind to advance treatments...

“The Trump bump in consumer confidence is already over. Tariff threats, stock market swings and rapidly reversing executive orders are causing Americans across the political spectrum to feel considerably more pessimistic about the economy than [before Trump] took office.” www.wsj.com/economy/cons...

Those bonehead Republicans managed to convince their base that trans women in sports was a huge issue—without showing a damn shred of data. They never drop facts because that would wreck their narrative. Look at these numbers… Less than 10 trans athletes out of 510,000 NCAA athletes nationwide.

Trump's promise to dismantle the Education Department will likely be more costly for red states than blue. Trump states, on average, use more federal funding in their education apportions than states that voted for Vice President Harris. www.axios.com/2025/02/05/t...

“If your bank failed, you lost any savings you had there. Politicians and even bankers in the 20th century wanted to end the cycle of devastating depressions, which is why we have so many financial regulations today. The Trump administration wants to roll back as many regulations as they can…”

The world’s richest man appears to be dismantling the government with an eye toward consolidating power and punishing his political enemies, Charlie Warzel writes. Will it work?

All of your most sensitive data and our country’s checkbook are in the hands of an unelected billionaire. This is the most corrupt administration in history and it’s putting our economy & government in serious jeopardy. It’s time to speak out and fight back. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/01/u...

After American airspace was closed on 9/11, over 230 flights with 30,000 passengers and crew were diverted to Canadian airports. Transport Canada received thousands of calls from members of the public offering to help the stranded passengers. Thinking about that today, for no particular reason.

It’s a coup. That’s what’s happening. It doesn’t matter if it’s only been two weeks. Impeachable offenses aren’t like wine. They don’t need to age.
