Sounds like you have it in you! So maybe now’s a good time to push for it. The usual thought leaders seem stunned, rudderless, and not terribly relevant.

Maybe people go stale/run out of things to say after a while. I’d certainly welcome new and informed voices in the NYT. (You’d be great!)

Just to be charitable, columnists need to crank the sausage out weekly. But I can’t believe we’re talking like this.

It’s also interesting to reflect on how historically common it is for truly dehumanising ideas to find justification in paternalistically benevolent rationales. Trump acknowledged Gaza’s uninhabitability in a way Biden never did. But his “solution” is preposterous & monstrous.

He’s part of the old bi-partisan foreign policy consensus/blob that gave us the Iraq war, clueless until the end.

and this in turn reminds of something a religion professor once said to our class: "in black church tradition, christians worship a jesus who has been lynched. in the white church tradition, christians worship a jesus who could be forgiven for lynching"

I recommend Vietnam if you get a chance - lots of history, of course! And I’m biased since my mom is from there. Lots to see, taste, and think about.

Willie Nelson?

Its sad because it became an integral part of everything from political organizing to early warning weather systems to relatively dry governmental agencies making jokes about holiday tree safety standards. The loudest idiots got mad they weren't getting adulating attention and ruined it for everyone

The “Florida Man” concept is meant as an insult, so whatever bellwether it is has a dystopian odor.
