An open letter to our fellow meteorologists and climate scientists from our Department Head, Steve Nesbitt

I have written a short statement responding to mass firings today of #NOAA / National Weather Service (#NWS) staff (which were concentrated among recent hires as well as highly experienced staff who had recently been promoted). Please see below screenshot & below for full text.

Bold move laying off folks at NOAA / NWS a few days before the first major severe weather outbreak of the year...

It's hard to overstate how dramatically pixi.sh and github.com/astral-sh/uv improve Python environment management. I've nearly entirely eliminated conda/mamba from my toolkit - and on the rare occasion I need one, I can trivially generate an environment from pixi.

Wtf is going on with the algorithm on Twitter? This morning it started shoving quite a bit of vile antisemetic content into my feed. Way, way beyond the bit that creeps into the typical right wing zeitgeist.

Are we really doing birtherism again?

Seems like an awfully relevant thing that should've been disclosed...

I mean, how are we supposed to respond to shitposts from the freaking official White House Twitter account? Seriously - what is the point other than antagonizing and pissing off 30% of the country (30-31-39 D-R-N/V in '25 election)? The post-rational/post-truth era is so freaking annoying.

To the dude open-carrying at Chick-Fil-A today... like, why?

Friends in colleagues near/around Louisville, KY - the duPont Manual Regional Science Fair is still looking for judges to participate at the in-person fair on March 9. This is one of the largest regional fairs in the US and feeds directly to the ISEF. If you're in the area and can volunteer... (1/2)

Stumbled across a nice NAS report from 1999 on "A Vision for the National Weather Service" targeting 2025. Anyone interested in a reading/discussion group to review and compare with where we've landed in RL? nap.nationalacademies.org/catalog/6434...

I have a functional sketch of pyrcel (pyrcel.readthedocs.io/en/stable/) re-written in JAX/diffrax. You can do all sorts of cool things with such an end-to-end differentiable adiabatic cloud parcel model. So I should pull an all-nighter and re-write the model core for a v1.4 or v2.0 release, right?

My favorite part about paying doctors' bills is seeing how when they screw up the insurance claim, they charge me personally between 4x-10x what they ultimately charge the insurer once it's fixed. And no, it shouldn't cost $300 for 10 mins to tell me my COVID test was (-) so I just have a cold.

Roses are red Violets are blue If you are within the yellow hatched area, there is a 10% probability of an EF-2+ tornado within 25 miles of you

I really dislike this epoch of American History where the folks in power have chosen to selectively forget what happened in the 1870's/80's and what the spoils system actually looked like in practice.

Infuriating.

Always so cool to see these data!

Every time I hear someone's phone play a ringtone, I'm reminded that this is a standard feature on every phone... one I haven't used in probably 15 years, but standard nonetheless.

That "whooshing" sound ain't the katabatics in Boulder this evening... it's the sound of a career storm chaser - someone who's _entire livelihood_ completely depends on freely available data from NOAA - complaining that they shouldn't have to pay taxes. SMH!

Some very nice work by my Google colleagues on assessing the Compute Carbon Intensity (measured as g CO2e / EFLOPs) of multiple generations of TPUs (including manufacturing, operational & retirement costs). CCI has improved by 3X from TPU v4i to TPU v6e. Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2502.01671

From. The. Rooftops. You're not going to find a magic money-printing machine that will give you these types of reliable returns year-after-year. NOAA and NWS don't just keep us safe - they create immense value for the American taxpayer.

Creating an "'Animals as Leaders' Radio" playlist on Spotify is like the ultimate lifehack for all the most amazing prog rock out there

Are we really doing "shrimp on a treadmill" again? It was fun to explain it a hundred times over the past 15 years, but I'd really rather talk about newer things...

Under-discussed topic following WIRED's expose on the team that DOGE is employing - the absurd power dynamic between young, college-aged people and the elite SV class. Do we expect any of the DOGEers would stand up and push back if they were asked to do something illegal? Ends don't justify means.

Are we in for a long winter, or is spring just around the corner? Find out what the nation’s favorite groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, “predicts”: noaa.gov/news/groundhog-day-2025-will-winter-linger-or-will-spring-prevail #GroundhogDay @nws.noaa.gov

Ooofff... you know you've sunk to a new depth when _Canadians_ are booing and jeering you...

Yes, we're well aware that 30 years ago, President Clinton sought a whole slew of government efficiency measures including by workforce buyouts. Do I really have to explain how working with Congress to pass clear legislation to achieve this is a far cry from what happened yesterday?

There's a reason that "Congress" is the opposite of "progress," and we're seeing first-hand why that is. Not to excuse the incompetence and ineffectiveness of recent sessions of Congress... but our political system isn't designed to bear rapid, massive changes. It's a safety feature - not a bug.

Ok, can some Meteorology department PLEASE award Randall an honorary Bachelor's in Atmospheric Science already?!?!?

Ummm....

Colleagues - does anyone have a good resource for long-form resume/CV templates (non-LaTeX, ideally Word or Google Doc)?

Good choice of thumbnail for this NPR article...
