Reminds me of a core principle in the classic Dale Carnegie book from nearly a century ago. Love how some of these intuited truths have been empirically supported.

I think providing a reason is a professional thing to do. My guess is that EICs who don’s may want to try to avoid a back and forth argument.
It’s also probably good for EICs to explain their reasons for sending revisions to different reviewers in a second round of reviews.

It’s an interesting study. I had to click through a second article and then a third to find out more details about the online program they’re referencing. Apparently something called Spring Health. It uses online screeners to determine a care plan, so that might be some of the savings

There’s a lot in the self-affirmation theory research. McQueen and Klein (2005) reviews methods of making a positive aspect of identity salient. A common way is to reflect on a particular important value or identity domain and why it is important to them and makes them feel good about themselves.

I show young adults a PowerPoint and read what it says, then I turn off the screen and see if they remember what it said. If they’re good at remembering the PowerPoint and have lots of debt they get a college degree.
