looking back, AOL had it right. 30 hours of internet per month was the right amount.

Denying refugees citizenship simply on the grounds that they arrived here “illegally” on small boats *when there are no legal routes* for most to use takes cynicism to new heights. If Govt thinks such performative cruelty will see off Reform, they’re wrong - it’s more likely to strengthen it

A damning indictment of the UK and its complicity in War Crimes and Genocide. Not just arming Israel but other Dictatorial States. And some wonder why the younger generations are cynical! 🤔😡 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

And that's right -- the annualized mean growth rate for CO2 is now at a record high 3.55 ppm as of January, 2025. Atmospheric CO2 is growing at the fastest rate in recorded history. This is not going to end well for global industrial civilization, children and other living things.

Great thread from Monbiot. You can read Bookchin's Ecology of Freedom here for free - theanarchistlibrary.org/library/murr...

An unintended consequence of all this 51st state talk is it really draws attention to how bad America does by most measures relative to peer countries.

Breaking News! Code Yikes! Global sea-ice extent reached a new record daily low, as of Feb. 3, breaking the previous daily record set in 2017. In other news, there is no other news.

Time to dig this classic out. Sigh.

We're all watching Severance right? Because if you are a fan of the dear departed David Graeber you should be. #Severance #davidgraeber

⏰The Govt have under 2 weeks to block the bailout of Thames Water. 📑25,000 people have signed the petition to take Thames Water into public ownership. #Thames has failed and shouldn't be rewarded with a £3 billion bailout. Agree? Sign our petition tinyurl.com/yxht3p94

#SaveThePCC Some of you may have read about the situation regarding our new landlord wishing to add a new redevelopment break clause, with only 6 months notice to our lease. For now, we're simply asking you all to share & sign the petition below; you.38degrees.org.uk/p/princechar...

A leaked government report reveals yet another attack on the right to protest; yet more plans to "monitor and disrupt" protests (as if the spycops scandal never happened); yet another conflation of protest with extremism and terrorism. We've expelled one draconian government and elected another.

A violent criminal? A threat to society? A danger to democracy? No, no and no. This is someone being punished again and again for giving a damn about humanity and the living world. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

Me: Well, after this latest climate induced catastrophe, surely everyone will realise the climate crisis is real and governments will start taking effective action, surely? Governments: Let's put economic growth before climate action. How about a 3rd runway at Heathrow? #climatechange

My review of the new Wardruna album out this week. Spoiler alert, it's brilliant. freq.org.uk/reviews/ward... #wardruna #folk #metal

Birna is "full of wonder and an absolute joy to listen to. @wardruna.bsky.social can render a sense of atmosphere and landscape ... based on traditional folk instrumentation of the early mediæval period" writes @davepettit.bsky.social. Out on Friday via By Norse freq.org.uk/reviews/ward...

Thread/ Today, a devastating report from the @rcn.org.uk, based on the testimony of over 5000 NHS nurses, has rightly catapulted the national shame that is NHS 'corridor care' into the headlines once more. (1/15)

Every single unit of CO2 adds to global warming. And, yes, people love KICKING THE CAN DOWN THE ROAD. And then they have children... S M F H

Classic mnemonics to help you remember:

It's hard to imagine a more brutal illustration of climate injustice and a failed society than indentured teenage slaves being used to protect the homes of wealthy Americans.

Somewhere some evil genius is slavering over a line graph that shows the slow descent of the UK into depression & depravity as a direct consequence of how difficult it is to buy a Wimpy Bender or a Brown Derby. We never knew what we had until it was gone.

"Cold Blows The Rain is a precipitation-swept collection of 8 folk songs that combine Bridget’s evocative vocals with the traditional instrumentation of The Apparitions ...sparse but perfect, bowed and plucked violin and droning harmonium" writes @davepettit.bsky.social freq.org.uk/reviews/hayd...

Death feels imminent for 96% of children in Gaza, study finds

Jesus wept I hate the British government. To be fair of course I hate government full stop. Opt out? How about get the fuck out? @https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/dec/17/uk-proposes-letting-tech-firms-use-copyrighted-work-to-train-ai?CMP=share_btn_url

“A study recently found that virtually all children in Gaza now feel their deaths are imminent, and half of those surveyed said they wish to die.” What kind of Monster creates a world like this? www.caitlinjohnst.one/p/meditation...

It is interesting to see this in the wild. This is western regime change propaganda, this is theatre. Originating with AFP or Reuters, then repeated. A liberated people marvelling at the abundance of free market capitalism. First mcdonalds in moscow after berlin wall vibes. NB:I DONT CONDONE ASSAD

Have to say, on a serious note, this is literally the "Propaganda of the Deed" stuff anarchists once spoke of, and the speed with which the public have taken it on board will be frightening all the right people.

I buy a book the same way I buy a bottle of wine: do I like the little picture on the front, do I like the little blurb on the back, and does it look like it’ll &#% me up for $12

News balance? King approves of Qatar (never mind the immigrant worker deaths feel the peace efforts) and the state broadcaster parades his banquet menu for added knowyourplaceness. Or children's malnutrition. UK media is a toxic jealousy-generating anger farm. Thankfully there are alternatives. 👇

Today is the Observer’s 233rd birthday. And the first of 4 strike days. I grew up in South Wales in the shadow of the miners’ strike. Extraordinary to be joining a picket line outside what I believed was my liberal progressive news org all these years later. We’re so grateful for your support & ✊

Teslas already video stuff happening inside them: give them an LLM and they could plausibly monitor their users for expressions of anti-Trump sentiment and locate a nearby bridge abutment or railway level crossing to terminate the subversive's vehicle usage license with extreme prejudice.

The failure so far achieve ceasefire is right here: USA has allowed Israel to jointly make up ceasefire plans with it, and then if Hamas accepts them, Israel still gets to decide whether it accepts it own plan. So don't expect much from this one either. imemc.org/article/hama...

It's at this time of year, when the Christmas songs come on the radio, that I like to remember one of the Pogues finest works.

Breaking news! November, 2024, came in at the second warmest in recorded history, at 1.62°C above the pre-industrial baseline. Starting in June, 2023, there have now been 18 consecutive months above the pre-2023 record high, likely the hottest string of 18 months in the last 120,000+ years.
