2.5% is the minimum required to stand still. It doesn’t pay for an uplift in capabilities required to face Russian or global threats. Let alone adapt to a situation where NATO is defunct.

Yes, in balance pragmatism would be preferable, but the entire approach to tariffs suggest that there’s a preference for brute strength over logic.

Lord Hennessy’s excellent book British submarines and nuclear forces (The Silent Deep) argues we could probably keep Trident running for a while without America… but would be a very difficult situation, and would make already painful choices on defence even worse…
