The status of the #Uyghur men was documented by myself and @nyrola over a year ago. The men were in danger and living in inhumane conditions. No UN agency supported them and no organisation publicly advocated on their behalf. #China #Thailand #Uyghurs

Advocacy by organisations ramped up in the dying days as it became clear the men would be deported but it was many years too late. Dedicated individuals did all they could behind the scenes but they needed more support from the start. #Uyghurs #China #Thailand

This is such a “through the looking glass” kind of take from the author. The idea that somehow Tibet is the only movement for independence/sovereignty that gets international legitimacy and attention is a weird take at best.

We also call for further work on sincisation. Sincisation is not just happening in Islamic communities - there are serious questions to be asked about its impacts in other religious communities and other ethnic groups, and its relationship to authoritarian governance of identity in Xi's China.

Overall we find that the impacts of sinicisation have been systematically underestimed. This campaign represents an attempt by the Party-state to dictate what Islam in China should be, and reaches deep into the life and culture of Hui communities.
