“Computer says no.”

In a nutshell 👇🏾 “People will die,” said Dr. Catherine Kyobutungi, executive director of the African Population and Health Research Center, “but we will never know, because even the programs to count the dead are cut.” www.nytimes.com/2025/02/27/h...

The Hong Kong courts have reached a new Orwellian low. In July 2019, a pro-Beijing mob rampaged through Yuen Long, brutally attacking passengers. Among the victims was democratic leader Lam Cheuk-ting. Today, the court sentenced Lam to years in prison—as a perpetrator.

During fieldwork, I encountered #Uyghurs in danger of deportation and police harassment. I emailed several available addresses for the UNHCR to alert them. They did not respond and they blocked my professional email address. www.unhcr.org/news/press-r...

This is a critical example of how the conflation of different definitions of Chineseness is being forced on HKers. We also see this irt language (i.e., the conflation of racial, cultural, and political definitions of Chineseness to promote Mandarin as the only true expression of Chinese identity).

For those wondering why Uyghurs— like those sent back by the Thai government today — would risk such a dangerous and difficult journey through Thailand this article provides a glimpse into the experiences of Uyghur asylum seekers.

It seems important, today, to highlight a new report by Dr. Rian Thum, exploring current policy in the XUAR. On available evidence, Thum concludes "all of the policies that led to accusations of mass atrocities in the Uyghur region continue, and some are expanding": www.ushmm.org/genocide-pre...

Utterly appalled by this. Non-refoulement is at the heart of international refugee standards. My heart goes out to those deported, their families, and the Uyghur diaspora. Such a blatant transgression of a core humanitarian principle is a chilling precedent for refugee communities worldwide.

Confirmation of the return to Xinjiang. Just to be clear the United Nations OHCHR considers this kind of refoulment as a human rights abuse and against the spirit of international human rights law: www.ohchr.org/sites/defaul...

Chinese media outlet Xinhua news had confirmed the "repatriation" of 40 people involved in "illegal immigration" from Thailand 😧 Plane flew from BKK to Kashgar overnight. This is a heartless move by the Pheu Thai govt coalition.

Devastating. These men were trying to get free, Thailand held them, now sending them to PRC for prison, death

eerie...and, most importantly, tragic. "last seen near Kashgar"

This is an absolute travesty as these men now almost certainly be subject to recriminations and human rights abuse (and possibly worse).

Very excited to be able to share, via this publisher's message, two blurbs for my forthcoming @columbiagr.bsky.social book, my first to deal with Thailand & Burma; the endorsements are from Thongchai Winichakul & Emma Larkin, both mean a lot to me myemail.constantcontact.com/---Coming-so...

Un nouveau rapport sur la situation en Région ouïghoure, écrit par Rian Thum et publié par l’Holocaust Memorial Museum (USA) www.ushmm.org/genocide-pre...

Enjoying a nice Saturday afternoon visit to the Whitworth Gallery to see the #Uyghur arts and culture display at Manchester’s #MACFest2025

Back in January I had the great pleasure of hosting @jwassers.bsky.social for a chat about the new edition of his book, ‘Vigil: The Struggle for Hong Kong‘ at the MCI. You can now watch our conversation here: youtu.be/FCput3z1ji0?...

Here is a 6 minute video excerpt that previews some themes in my forthcoming @columbiagr.bsky.social book on The Milk Tea Alliance, edited excerpt from @davidstroup.bsky.social’s event with me in Manchester m.youtube.com/watch?v=vcQn... cc @xunlingau.bsky.social @mekongreview.com

The parallel of this is quite literally Western allies pressuring the leader of Czechoslovakia to cede the Sudetenland to Nazi Germany.

This is a concentration camp. They are describing a concentration camp.

The March issue is online! Featuring research on post-Soviet democratization, military patriotism in Donbas, cults in China, arms procurement in Ukraine, revolution in Romania, legislating autocracy in Russia, healthcare in China & Vietnam, and North Korea's use of foreign youth for legitimation.

A must-read for anyone interested in the current situation of Muslims in the PRC.

Full credit to @chinalawtranslate.bsky.social for archiving the Five-Year Plan, it has almost entirely vanished off the Chinese internet since.

Important new report by @htheaker.bsky.social and @davidstroup.bsky.social "Making Islam Chinese: Religious Policy and Mosque Sinicisation in the Xi Era" tinyurl.com/37htx5j5

Out today! This report from @htheaker.bsky.social and me has been a long time in production. We hope that this can be a resource through which we can discuss the program of #Sinicization in #Hui communities comprehensively and develop a clearer picture of what its implementation has produced.

Available today: a report, authored by myself and my friend and colleague @davidstroup.bsky.social , exploring the aims and impacts of the sinicisation of Islam campaign in Hui communities. See here: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

I've been half-expecting, half-dreading calls for shutting down RFA and VoA. I'm more familiar with RFA's work - but god, they're so good. Utterly indispensible reporting, much of it achieved simply by calling up police stations and *asking*.

I could use some precedented times and non-world-historical changes

🏆Congratulations to Dr. @davidstroup.bsky.social (@uompol.bsky.social) for being shortlisted for the Ethnic and Racial Studies Martin Bulmer Prize! His article examines Islamophobia & ethnic politics in China during the COVID-19 crisis🎉 www.manchester.ac.uk/about/news/d...

Although there are many who would like Ireland to be a place where everyone looks, dresses, speaks, thinks, and acts the same, we're all the richer for our diversity. The Uyghur diaspora in Ireland is no exception and it is wonderful to have their community in our land of Céad Míle Fáilte 💚 🩵

The Ghulja Massacre of 1997 and the Face of Uyghur Genocide Today 28 years ago, a brutal crackdown on Uyghur protesters changed one family’s lives forever. Incredibly, things have only gotten worse for the Uyghurs since then. thediplomat.com/2021/02/the-...

The problem with Patriotic education, be it the CPC or GOP vision, is that it frames itself as building a positive, unified national spirit, but focuses more on what they DON'T want to be taught, the ideas the aren't willing to confront. www.chinalawtranslate.com/en/patriotic...

same in China and Russia there's a xiaohongshu buzz phrase: questioning something, understanding something, becoming something. 质疑 理解 成为. from tiktok ban to patriotic education, kind of fits how China is to the US
