I always knew the “5 AM morning routine tricks billionaires use” type of pieces were bullshit propaganda but the ketamine-fueled juvenile refusing to get up before noon behaviors of Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg (per the new tell-all book) are somehow worse than I expected. These men are children

My newest article was just published in @ricochetmedia.bsky.social! Did you know that there have been at least three white supremacist "Canada First" movements in Canadian history? Why did the Conservative Party choose the "Canada First" slogan, despite the well-documented racist ties?

Jacqueline's point here, that too much media just runs stories without checking, is important. And also crazy-making. Why the hell would you want to "be a reporter" if not use the card that lets you call people about anything?

This guy’s always whining that people and government are getting in the way of him becoming filthy rich off other people's labor and data.

everyone should listen to this in its entirety but journalists should listen to it multiple times. this is how you ask questions. you just keep asking simple, easily answerable stuff and the evasiveness becomes that much more glaring

Trump rages at reporter for asking about his plan to expel Palestinians from Gaza. Trump: "Nobody's expelling any Palestinians from Gaza! Who are you with?" Reporter: "Voice of America" Trump: "No wonder!" I guess Trump forgot the government controls VOA and he nominated Kari Lake to oversee it.

What a profound generational shift.

51% of Canadians believe the government should approach the United States as a threat or as an enemy. Far fewer now see it as a friend or ally. Canadians have a less favourable view of the US than India, a country which murdered Canadian citizens on Canadian soil.

remember how Wile E. Coyote used to hold up a little sign saying ‘help’ or ‘oh no’ or some such just before the huge boulder crushed him

Had a nice day where I was too busy to look at my phone. Then I looked at my phone. Was nice while it lasted.

Easy to lose this in the noise of the day, but the prime minister of Canada just said the US president, leader of the global hegemon, wants to soften us up economically so he can annex us. That is one of the most remarkable statements, and realities, in our history.

This is so outrageous I actually had to double check it was real. What an unintentionally clear window into why all kinds of people dislike and distrust mainstream media institutions.

As a climate reporter I have dealt a *lot* with Americans' almost total lack of tolerance for sitting with complex problems. Ours is very much a "hurry up and get to the solutions" culture, a "I'm just trying to stay positive" culture. It's not real helpful when facing deeply rooted complex problems

Just imagine that after the last four weeks of campaigning, the only gain your party made was to defeat a Black woman who your party tried to destroy for supporting Palestine. Incredible stuff from the ONDP.

Whenever someone doubts that news should be publicly funded, show them this.

"The crowd again started shouting 'tax Elon,' 'tax the wealthy,” “tax the rich' and 'tax the billionaires.'" The county went 68% for Trump www.lagrandeobserver.com/news/local/r...

That’s how you write a headline, people.

Struggling to follow the Ontario election? Thank Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg I wrote about how big social media platforms and their mysterious, unregulated algorithms are manipulating public discourse, suppressing voter engagement and degrading democracy for @thestar.com 👇

New from 404 Media: a Musk ally has demanded administrative access to Notify.gov, a system that lets the government text the public. The access would give them large swathes of the publics' personal data too. A worker has resigned in protest rather than give access www.404media.co/musk-ally-de...

Checking in on people who flipped out at me for saying this (based on reporting of what pols were saying at the time and the timeline of events!) and calling me a conspiracy theorist for…uh, recalling that info… www.kenklippenstein.com/p/tiktok-ban...

i woke up in a bad mood i better look at the object that shows me all of the ongoing nightmares and also today specifically all of the love in the world that other people have

Day one of Obama's term, the GOP was facing the same odds and declared unanimously and unambiguously that they would not help him a lick and anyone who didn't like it could eat shit. It largely worked, and they left the literal playbook for the Dems - who have instantly surrendered.

“Oh, did a sportsball happen?” I whisper smugly from my vantage point on a distant cliff, the sounds of celebration in the village far below just barely audible over the lonely wind whipping my tattered cloak

I know a lot of Ontarians haven't needed to go to a hospital in the last few years, but it's bad, and this should have electoral consequences.

This picture delights me because the current reality is so disorienting, sometimes it feels like I'm going crazy, or what I think I remember is some fever dream. Also, I maintain that this should be said with a hard g.

Y'all pick a lane. Then make a little progress in your lane each day. Every serious, experienced organizer I know is Doing Their Thing. Instead of freaking out about each bit of bad news, we're in our lanes rapidly building dual power infrastructure and networks that don't rely on the goverment.

Almost two weeks ago, I found out I was one of 40 people getting laid off from NBC News. Those who know me know I’ve wanted to go independent for a long time. Later this month, I’m launching @spitfirenews.com. We need journalism that is louder than ever. spitfirenews.com/p/an-introdu...

aaaand now it all makes sense

From a journalist friend: Just spreading the word. The CDC is purging data, so people should archive their favorite CDC datasets today, namely ones around race/ethnic diversity, LGBTQ, and reproductive health. Also health data involving climate. The youth risk behavior survey has already gone down.

Just got this tip from an airline pilot

Look, I am just a small town scholar of mass murder, so let me ask a simple, naive question: And then what?

I love you San Francisco 💘💘💘

What I absolutely should do. And probably won't. But hopefully will.

As journalists we have to walk a fine line, and sensitive stories often need to pass internal legal reviews before publication. I like how Wired handled this — the headline doesn’t mince words and actually shows you how Musk’s salute is being received by Nazis www.wired.com/story/neo-na...

Ideas that are still good.

If you’re not afraid of getting canceled, you fucking coward, why didn’t you let them print your name?

Here's my new piece. It's a deep dive into why Millennials have been infantilized and why teenagerness has been extended into young adulthood: it's a tool of social control to render entire generations incapable of organizing to fight back. noraloreto.substack.com/p/inventing-...

Over the past 4–5 years, Facebook has sunset tools (chiefly CrowdTangle) used by researchers and journalists, made data difficult and expensive to get, and iced out academics studying disinformation. Now, it's shutting down the fact checking on its platform.

“new year, new me” i say, doing the old me stuff i’ve done every single year
