No matter what, never let the turkeys get you down. Good advice from my father. Related, on my first day of kindergarten he told me to never to let bigger kids tell me what to do. Both of these messages have proven to be very valuable.

I have been trying to formulate some rules for giving good talks and fundamentally it’s this: tell a story. People like stories, and they will listen to you if they trust you are telling them.

"weekend" comes from an 1860s misspelling of "weakened" as in "i'm weakened and going to take a nap." not many people know this

It’s almost as if storytelling is a key part of sci comms

Yay! Snuggle time!

did hitler have any charisma in his day? Cuz we are serving up some hot garbage saluters over here. How these guys got popular I will never understand

As it's an ebook, it's possible that Tor has switched out the except from an upcoming book that shows up at the end of the novel. Or there might be a copy error that's being corrected. Spelling/grammar corrections aside, the text of the novel itself has not been altered since its publication.

I thought I recognized the illustration style

Sounds like my everyday life

This week I learned that Balatro was designed and developed as a fun project for family and friends to enjoy ... by ONE PERSON. This boggles the mind.

But.....but.....it's Led Zeppelin!! #LedZeppelin 🎸🎸 #RIPBonzo 🥁🐐

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand what has been unfolding before our eyes, really ever since Reagan. This has been the Republicans' long-game plan, and here we are!

Yes!!! I was taught to avoid talking about both... but I didn't listen. Not talking about such topics leads to more misunderstanding.

So what do you do when your frustrated brain needs a break? I'm married to a pastry chef, so we bake.

Oh hi. You’re finally home from the barn. I am too comfy to get up to greet you

I’m sorry but this is fucking hilarious, I’m dead 😂😂

Anyway, here's Sugar the cat contemplating the impermanence of life and the very nature of existence, as one does

I don't believe in Hell, but if I did I would die happy knowing there was a special seating section for anyone currently railing against "the sin of empathy," and every one of those seats is made with hot rusty barbs

Thread.

My mom worked for a while as an operator at an answering service, she had the big board with all the cords and everything. That was when I was in junior high. It's a job that no longer exists, of course.

I know my wife's number and my daughter's number and other than that I have no idea of anyone else's. I 100% rely on caller ID and if I don't recognize who is calling, I don't answer (or I punt them into call screening, one of the pluses of having a Pixel phone).

One of the small pleasures of being terminally online is blocking a troll less than five seconds after he leaves an obnoxious comment, he doesn't even get to linger in the afterglow of his own cleverness before he gets sent to the cornfield

All the savings from long distance charges has gone into the cost of buying eggs

My memory of it was that it received a lot of carriage as a "balance" for Doonesbury, and generally paled in the comparison. It does still exist, and a quick check of recent strips does not suggest it has improved with age

Just reached 290,000 followers here on Bluesky, and, well: Wow. Thank you for being part of my experience here. To celebrate this really cool milestone, I've donated to Black Girls Do STEM, because we need diversity in STEM fields more than ever these days. Onward! bgdstem.com

Incremental. Long-term. No immediate commercial application. This is the kind of research the US has traditionally excelled in and which lays the cobblestones to history epochal accomplishments like putting a man on the moon, & which we are gutting every day. This study is from China.

At a restaurant and the couple at next table are on a first date and you know I can’t leave now.

Think we're going to get into social media quote graphics business. Everybody else just does this while we're cutting woodland creatures out of stock photos. Work smarter not harder.

Only the “almighty dollar” means anything to them. We have the power! Mark your calendars:

HEY NOW This is indeed a problem with using the vernacular of the times, I am now stuck with using "PDA" instead of "phone" or "tablet" in the Old Man's War series. I can't retcon it, so it keeps showing up. It'll be used in the new book too.

After nearly two weeks, we finally see the Grand Tetons again

Js I traveled to Hoshiimo Shrine in Ibaraki to take the eye-catching cover photo for the New Nanzan Guide to Japanese Religions. Ibaraki is beautiful!!!

Chapter 5 of The Grapes of Wrath is the single best description of corporate harm to individuals I’ve ever read.

Seems legit.... We don't want to be a nation of underachieving Americans.

Really enjoying the stories about congressmen getting yelled at about DOGE shit in their town halls. Not because I feel like it's necessarily going to move things in the right direction in the next election cycle or two, really. I just like stories about congressmen getting yelled at I think.
