When he had longer hair, they called him Leo Prayer.

He thought it was a Lennon & McCartney song. Poor George, couldn't catch a break.

James Herbert takes me back ... to the summer, when I reread The Fog. He's no great stylist, but his portraits of minor victims really capture a damp, Tuesday afternoon disgruntled Englishness. I mean, Alan Bennett's job is safe, but he's more skilled than I appreciated in my teens.

I've got that Ted Hughes biography by Jonathan Bate - excellent. I even interacted with him once or twice on the other site. Bate, not Hughes.

This was the production - I saw it in Newcastle. Over a quarter of a century ago, my sweet lord. pinterlegacies.uk/production/454

In the late 90s, I saw him as Goldberg, with Prunella Scales as Meg, in Pinter's The Birthday Party. All very good.

I don't quite click with Chekhov, so I'm finding the stories quite hard work. The Wagner book is a lot easier. He was the type who wanted to bend the whole world to his artistic will, and usually managed it - the actual King of Bavaria gave him a house and an income so he could keep composing.

The tree is fine, but those are enviable bookcases. One rule I would instigate is: if you can't fit a hardback on every shelf, they shouldn't be allowed to sell them.

There's only a handful of songs that reliably give me goosebumps, and most of them are by U2 - One Tree Hill, Bad, All I Want Is You, and Pride (In The Name Of Love) among them.

I went from Doctor Who novelisations to Salem's Lot in one summer. Also started listening to rock music that summer - one reason I can never give up on U2.

375? I think I'm doing well if I get around 60.

One of the only bands whose first and last albums were their best.

Chekhov short stories, and non-fiction about Richard Wagner's late marriage to his best friend's wife. This all sounds a bit heavy, I suppose.

Well, I'm a Geordie, so there's that. Also a writer and tutor.

The Great Gatsby is only a couple of thousand words longer.

Scrooge’s house is described as being like a house that had hidden itself away a little too well during a game of hide and seek. What a vision he had.

A biography of Leonard Bernstein. Very good indeed.
