www.theguardian.com/games/2025/m... All around good takes.

Let's play videos are a game changer for video game analysis. You can find hundreds of detailed player experiences from all across the world, most of them including face and input recording. Anything from highly edited interactive experiences, to painfully slow livestreams. Incredible resource.

If you want consistently interesting and well made games to play on your phone, look no further than @adamatomic.bsky.social pico-8 output. I spent a couple of hours last night when I should've been sleeping playing Cave of cards. The pico-8 mobile controls are actually good!

The kids ain't alright. I've started teaching an elective on 'Videogame analysis and creation' for students of any major (though it's mostly computer science and multimedia design). It's tough to see them parrot alt-right talking points when we get into discussions of games and representation.

This looks like a great crash course into videogame history.

This 100% it's never about "balance", what does balance even mean? It's about feel. (Not game-feel necessarily). We really need better semantics for games discourse.

Jokes are and will always be the best reason to make art.

My own take on this is the very notion of "design" is an inescapably poisoned and neoliberal concept and personally I'd rather approach games in terms of media or art (Please nobody lookup what kind of school employs me) bsky.app/profile/sylv...

Slightly warmer take. No, but this is actually part of the problem with players equating 'realism' with better games, which fuels the graphical arms race that bloats development times and sinks studios. Also... This is sometimes paired with "beautifying" female characters.

Loved this take on quality of life changes in games. I for one, am down for arguing semantics, especially when there is a hidden meaning to common terms that needs questioning. This one asks, are "quality of life" changes ever actual improvements? Or just unexamined changes to design flavours.

Severance is so hard to watch because this actually happened to me

How is this so amazing!!

Writing tip: After you finish, go back & cut all the adverbs. Then all the adjectives. Then all the other words. Eat the paper. Now you're free.

I did it! Speed Squared is now available for download and play in browser! Itch: kichex.itch.io/speedsquared GxGames: tinyurl.com/yc6ezdyc Gamejolt: tinyurl.com/bdfhh7c3 Play it for free! leaving a review is highly appreciated! Thanks to @aelspecto.bsky.social for the awesome music!!

Remember the whole point Squid Game was trying to make? Neither does these game devs...

What the actual fuck. Are journalists actually doing the "videogames cause violence" bit with... let me check I read this right... AMONG US!!!? What a target to replace CoD in the modern era to distract from the collapse of American ultra capitalist libertarian ideals.

My brain seemed to think I couldn't burn out if I was unemployed. FALSE You'd imagine I'd get better at seeing and preventing it after everything. ALSO FALSE.

I never got into twitter. Only used it when the studio I worked at needed an online presence. Apparently it was "the place to be". I don't think it ever was a good place to promote games, but I did like hearing takes from devs I loved. All that is to say, Bsky it's reminding me I love to write.

Looking for a job in games is so discouraging. It's been months of going through round after round of screenings and interviews to generally just end up ghosted. I've followed all advice I could find, taken mentorships, done and redone my portfolio and CV a number of times. Just venting here. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

happy November 26th

As an artist that works in design, I sometimes ask what lens I should use to approach game design problems. A simplistic distinction would be: Design is aimed at creating useful things and art at creating useless ones. As such, I prefer to think of games through the useless lens of art. (...)

The split in how Balatro's nomination in being received is very telling of the antagonistic relationship gamers have towards gamedevs. The goals of these two communities couldn't be more polarized and this is reinforced by the incursion of the alt-right into gamer spaces since gamergate.

Since starting that solo dev project, I've had to restart and refactor a number of times. Not recommended. But I'm now using Popochiu (carenalga.itch.io/popochiu), an amazing point and click engine for @godotengine.org made in Colombia. Now I'm trying to build an MVP. This is where I'm at.

So, solo dev is hard. I've been on that quest for a few years now, trying to create an adventure style game inspired by the ๐Ÿ’€"๐”—๐”ฏ๐”ฌ๐”ญ๐”ฆ๐” ๐”ž๐”ฉ ๐”Š๐”ฌ๐”ฑ๐”ฅ"๐Ÿ’€ film genre created in Cali, to tell a story about the city and about my uncle, forcefully disappeared since the 80's.
