BREAKING: South Korea’s Supreme Court has upheld the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who declared martial law on December 3, 2024. His removal is a major win for democracy and rule of law in #SouthKorea.

Today's (April 2nd) Google AI search result can't even get the date right. Beware the computers.

“But her emails!!” Ahem.

Congrats, Wisconsin!

This reminds me of the flimsy US strategy for delivering aid to Gaza that only operated for 20 days and parts of which later washed up on Tel Aviv beaches. The US version didn't withstand moderate seas. This looks quite a bit more substantial.

I can’t believe this is real! It’s like the worst caricature of how the right says Soros does politics.

Open letter from nearly 2000 NAS member scientists: "We see real danger in this moment. We hold diverse political beliefs, but we are united (...) in wanting to protect independent scientific inquiry. We are sending this SOS to sound a warning: the nation’s scientific enterprise is being decimated."

Did he even say “thank you” once?

"Shocking" (not) news of the day: the US Air Force, after completely mismanaging a massive, unneeded effort to build high-priced, destabilizing, vulnerable land-based, nuclear-armed missiles, is looking to extend the life of the ones they already have until 2050: gulfnews.com/world/americ...

We will be on the right side of this fight.

Great Sam Cook song performed by Charles Yang. Something different for the timeline because we all need it and “change is gonna come”.

Resources compiled by the Committee on Human Rights of the US National Academy of Sciences to protect scientists, immigrant students, patients, health care workers. So sad this is needed in the US. mailchi.mp/nationalacad...

I just can't get over that their justification for this kind of illiberal authoritarianism is "to protect Jews." It so obviously makes us less safe.

Remember, folks: This clown car has a nuclear arsenal at its disposal. I shudder to think what they're revealing on other chats we haven't seen.

Don't be fooled by this kind of propaganda. 'Golden Dome' is and will remain a complete fantasy. The author information of this "opinion" piece tells you all you need to know: "Phil Jasper is the president of Raytheon, an RTX business." For the facts, please see the report in the comments.

Feeling somewhat let down that I haven't been added to the group chat for the nuclear posture report yet. Maybe my security settings are too tight?

I wrote this in July 2016 www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/glo...

"The United States' indulgence of Israeli nuclear weapons has not escaped international attention, and the evident hypocrisy has undermined US nonproliferation policy." A new essay by nuclear policy experts Victor Gilinsky and Leonard Weiss.

"If you don’t like what is happening to this country, you don’t need to wait for someone to come along and save it: You need each other. That should be the message that Democrats embrace, because most Americans don’t want to go where Donald Trump and Elon Musk are leading us."

Look, folks, you don't have to believe me. Literally, the guy who wrote the books & coined the terms is telling you it's a five-alarm fire. If Steve is saying this, you should be deeply, immediately, & overwhelmingly concerned.

“Right now, DOGE is treating efficiency as a simple cost-cutting exercise. But science isn’t a procurement process; it’s an investment portfolio. If a venture capital firm measured efficiency purely by how little money it spent, rather than by the returns it generated, it wouldn’t last long.”

Reading this while attending a very large international conference and the vibe is very much that this may be the last. Many international scientists and non citizens facing increasing anxiety about intl. travel.

This doesn’t happen in a free country.

A view from #APSGlobalSummit2025

Macron has announced a French airborne nuclear deterrent base right on the German border - facing Russia. There’s also going to be massive investment in two new squadrons of Rafales carrying hypersonic air-to-surface nuclear missiles. Europe rearms.

God, that was hard to bear. Students told a physics town hall that grad schools have rescinded admission. NSF proposals are censored for words like “bias,” even when the meaning is technical. Physics curricula are being banned by school districts for encouraging girls. #APSGlobalSummit2025 #APSMarch

People might think that whatever destruction is done to science in the US, we can undo in 4 years with a Democratic president and Congress. The problem is that many areas require specialized knowledge and skills built up over years, and once that's lost, it's hard to get back.

Universities are under siege. The US needs specialists like Dr. Alawieh. #sciencesaveslives and immigrants make us stronger. I hope my alma mater fights this one to the end.

My colleague, @rrucs.bsky.social, from @ucsusa.bsky.social on the dangers of misunderstanding and the importance of dialogue in US/China nuclear relations:

When you’re so afraid of progressive thinking and insecure about power that you destroy your own society’s future due to fear of those who might challenge your insular views:

While Schumer acts like passing the budget is business as usual, Newsom "frequently seems less interested in arguing than in finding common ground, assuming the good faith of people who have next to none." We're no longer in the realm of compromise as long as the GOP is shredding the constitution.

Universities: We must, indeed, all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately

🚨MAJOR DEVELOPMENT Portugal has cancelled plans to buy F-35 fighter jets from the US and will look to replace their F-16s with European fighters. “We have to be able to count on the predictability of our allies, which is no longer the case with the United States."💥

Doubt is all it takes to undermine nuclear nonproliferation and if there is one thing this administration is expert at, it is destroying trust of our (erstwhile?) allies and undermining global security while they're at it.

When you can't even get the votes in this administration, you've really redefined what it means to belong to the dregs of society. I didn't know they had minimum qualifications.

Today, EPA's Lee Zeldin announced rollbacks on key environmental regulations, including pollution limits for coal plants, climate rules & EV standards. He called it a “consequential" day of deregulation, but for those who care about clean air & water, it's one of the most destructive in US history.

In 1969 Nixon told his NSC US extended nuclear deterrence guarantees were "a lot of crap." The history of those promises is more complex, and their value more questionable, than this poorly informed article would lead you to believe. Nukes have zero proven value in deterring conventional attacks.

Trump couldn't be working harder to shut off everything that actually serves this country. This intentional destruction of educational institutions (e.g. attacks on universities and research institutions) is the opposite of "making American great".

Tell me again how “genius” Trump is playing five-dimensional chess: “These programs enhance U.S. security,” said Laura Holgate, a former American ambassador to the I.A.E.A. and a top adviser to President Barack Obama on nuclear terrorism. She added: “This is not charity. It’s in our self-interest.”

You can’t make this shit up. Dumbest administration in US history.

French Senator Claude Malhuret: "Washington has become Nero’s court, with an incendiary emperor, submissive courtiers and a jester high on ketamine... We were at war with a dictator, we are now at war with a dictator backed by a traitor."
