USDA scientists terminated from Cereal Disease Lab in St. Paul www.mprnews.org/story/2025/0...

Deleting this because I have heard from a reliable source that all of the ACIP members remain accounted for/not fired. They met on Friday. Obviously unsure of the future here but this hasn't happened.

Yes. It seems like they didn’t get nearly as many people as they’d hope to accept the deferred resignation program and now they’re trying to mentally break them and get them to quit. They want agencies to fail.

I don't think THEY will be viewed as the villains, Russ

I am inundated with messages from federal workers who are feeling frantic, furious and fed up after receiving Musk’s email and reading his threatening X post. The psychological warfare is the point.

connoisseur of carrie coon's work

they’re gonna turn Kiss Me I’m Irish guys into socialists and turn this whole country around

My first thought was “let the man rest!” but listening to this game he is just so happy to be at a basketball game. Warming my cold heart

FFS New York Times. They’re not *his generals. Unbelievable

tonight in “things that definitely happened” … can’t wait to see the canada side of this readout

I've seen it from a couple of agencies already. Sent from an "HR" OPM address. The spam-ass subject line is "What did you do last week?"

regret to inform everyone this is a real guy who could be pope

Regret?

PRAMS is the source of data for basically every effort to limit infant mortality and all the health dangers mothers face before and after birth. So a pretty big deal the Elon and Co decided to cancel the program.

Shit you not, I firmly believe that one saving grace for many public universities will be the threat of college football going away

From a purely economics standpoint, if we funded 99 useless studies on catheter infections and 1 good study that improved prevention / treatment, it'd still be totally worth it. ... but instead everything's frozen, and they won't even say why. They hate science and they resent scientists.

I’m pretty sure the number of Nazi salutes at an event that makes it a Nazi rally is one but I guess it’s nice all these CPAC speakers are offering confirmation

ROME (AP) — Vatican says Pope Francis in critical condition, suffered a long asthmatic respiratory crisis in the morning.

Update on the Measles outbreak in Texas and New Mexico www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/u... There likely hundreds of cases, so many not being diagnosed. And many more to come. All preventable.

“What this does is discriminate against people who are underrepresented,” The reviewer added that evaluation for the general and diversity pools are the same. “I can’t stress enough that an undeserving grant “is not going to get funded, whether it’s diversity or not” www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/s...

To reiterate: we WILL NOT host rallies at sites without a lead and a team. So, if you want to attend a rally in a state that is red or grey, you gotta step up! #standupforscience @standupforscience.bsky.social

You never know when something that the govt does for you will be needed. One year ago I had no idea that my perfectly healthy daughter was going to need a 504 just a few months later. It has meant so much that her school seamlessly helped us do this.

I want to say again to academics who are interested in public writing. Look locally. Sure national outlets are good and I do that too, but this kind of visibility in your community can have a real impact.

Hegseth's tattoos got a lot of attention, but of course he denied they were racist. What probably should have gotten more attention: He belongs to a church that teaches slavery was the pinnacle of race relations. dougwilsonbelieves.com/beliefs/sout...

I get the decision, I really do, and it shows how important research support is to academia. I just find it interesting that one of the first reactions among admin is to pause the foundational mission of the college in educating and training.

“Many grad programs are pausing and reducing admissions in response to NIH funding pauses and pending EO’s on indirect cost reductions. These workforce reductions have the potential to imminently and irreversibly harm research labs & grad programs”

Musk took over the US government with graft and is using it—in combination with his space launch firm—to exploit an allied country that’s suffering under Russian invasion for its mineral rights. The scheme is so imperiously evil I feel like audiences wouldn’t find it believable in a Bond villain.

"It is absurd to mindlessly decimate the workforce that has led the world in science over the past 75 years, and to willingly give up excellent scientists and talent," Beyer wrote. www.reuters.com/world/us/us-...

Thanks to the discovery of sodium channels and experiments in giant squid 🦑 and much more in between, we now have a non-addictive pain treatment 💊 Brilliant storytelling of why long term funding of basic science across disciplines is critical.

Another great piece of science history, describing how the collective work from many laboratories advances knowledge and how basic science funding by the NIH is critical for new treatments developed by industry by @jeremymberg.bsky.social

that seems very illegal 🤷🏻‍♀️

From a source at NIH, some grants may be nixed because the investigator’s bio sketch mentions DEI-related activities, even if the science itself has nothing to do with it.

Junior scientists in the US are facing a shit-sandwich. If you have the financial means, apparently the Undergraduate Research Center is running a crowdfunding campaign to support the next generation of researchers. I donated, maybe you can too. crowdfund.ucdavis.edu/URC

JUST IN: A judge has enjoined President Trump's effort to block federal funds from going toward grant recipients who engage in DEI practices. The judge says the orgs are likely to succeed on claims that this is viewpoint discrimination, among other issues storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Already bruised by the Trump administration’s first round of firings of federal workers, employees at NIH faced more bad news. NIH’s 27 institute directors were told this week that the agency must cut staffing back to 2019 levels, or at least 10% below its 2024 tally. scim.ag/3EP8gjy

Mainers are generally older and quiet, but telling them how to run their state is unwise for two reasons. 1. They either have or know a guy with a wood chipper. 2. They have access to both endless forest and scary-ass ocean. You’d best think twice.

The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Friday that there would be no new Ph.D. offers of admission while Pitt works to understand how reduced federal aid could impact the institution.
