i remember when i invited someone to an interview & they refused to use my pronouns bc “there’s many bigger things to worry about.” i chose not to interview them. confusing bc i’ve done interview based work for over 15 years, it was the 1st explicit refusal. also, never had this experience w farmers

maybe people should start saying “terror is the point.”

**Iowa mRNA bill is dead** Thank you! to @sarahforiowa.bsky.social and other leaders in the Iowa Senate for blocking the anti-mRNA vaccine bill. A huge relief for Iowans looking to a brighter future with better cancer treatments and lifesaving pandemic influenza vaccines

Update: I'm told the EO eliminating the Dept. of Education will be dropping tomorrow mid-afternoon. Even though McMahon ended up sending her email to staff with no mention of the EO, it's still very much coming.

if the dems had one ounce of real strategy they would be broadcasting a counter sotu- running at the same time- to shape a counter narrative and to capture attention.

Iowa House Speaker Pat Grassley took some reporter Qs yesterday. I asked him whether he pressured reluctant members of his caucus to vote for the anti-trans bill. You can watch our exchange here, starting around the 3:55 mark: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wi3I...

Posted the audio file and written recap of Monday’s radio show/Iowa politics podcast, “KHOI’s Capitol Week.” We highlighted some under-covered angles related to Iowa's anti-trans law. EXCLUSIVE: My new @bylinetimes.bsky.social investigation reveals that Donald Trump’s war on “wokeness” and "diversity" has roots in a racist, antisemitic Nazi foundation devoted to eugenics bylinetimes.com/2025/02/27/t...

the thing about “democrats should take popular cultural positions” is that what constitutes popular is a function of an interaction between the public and elites. if a faction of elites start screaming about a vulnerable minority and another faction says they have a point, this shapes the public.

This shit is happening here. Please stop pretending Minnesota is some one in a million safe haven for us. I guarantee you know someone who believes some absolute horseshit about trans people. It is so so important for you to talk to the people you have the most chance of convincing: your family.

One day, if we ever get out of this, it’s going to seem very conspicuous that in the years after Dobbs the media and elites were preoccupied with pronatalism, male loneliness, and prolonged digressions about feminists’ various evils and personal failures.

For those historians keeping track, esp #milhist folks, “history” is now a flagged word bc of its apparent connection to #DEI. Canary in a coal mine, indeed. @smh-historians.bsky.social 🗃️ www.tpr.org/military-vet...

This bird is what we need right now. We are taking a brief break to connect with good things.

sexual energy?? did chat gpt write this?

I moved to Iowa when I was 13. It was a very blue state then. My twin sister still lives in the town where we went to high school. I always liked the idea of returning to Iowa to teach in higher ed. That possibility is officially off the table now.

iowa: first in the nation to remove a protected class from civil rights protections second in the nation for cancer is this winning?

My read of the trans visa rules are that this policy doesn’t ban entry for trans people officially. But it does provide cover for refusing entry to any trans person with an updated gender marker on documents. And it forces people to undergo humiliating surveillance in any case.

SF 360 in Iowa effectively criminalizes distribution of COVID vaccines within the state (or all gene-based vaccines). Hope Illinois and Minnesota are ready to support even more medical tourism 🫠 www.legis.iowa.gov/legislation/...

Ch. 4 of this book arrives just when I need to read it: "Care at the End of the World: Health/Care Infrastructure and Disability Justice Life-Writing"

CFP for Women's Studies Quarterly! The theme is "chronic" and they are looking for both researched and personal essays on the "social, affective, and political consequences of living with chronic illness." Essays due March 14th! They are not not limited to traditional academic writing!

NEWS: In USDA, multiple people have been asked to report the names of LGBTQ employee resource group leaders to higher-ranking officials, according to interviews with workers and a document reviewed by Mother Jones. + similar in the Department of the Interior

The Iowa House Judiciary Committee just approved a wide-ranging transgender discrimination bill. It was a mostly party-line 13-8 vote with Republican Brian Lohse joining Democrats to vote no. Background on the bill: www.bleedingheartland.com/2025/02/23/n...

Today a sweeping transgender discrimination bill is scheduled to run through a subcommittee and the full Iowa House Judiciary Committee. My deep dive on what's in the bill and the many practical and constitutional problems: #ialegis #trans #iowa #LGBTQ www.bleedingheartland.com/2025/02/23/n...

This is not getting much attention outside of the state. It is an everthing and the kitchen sink kind of bill. www.iowapublicradio.org/state-govern...

everything old is resurfacing

Yesterday Bernie Sanders spoke in Iowa City, and then again to two overflow spaces. People came from all over the midwest. Local speakers included impacted federal workers, students, and union leaders. Workers of the world, unite. We are the ones who can defeat authoritarianism.

State Rep Brian Lohse is the second Iowa House Republican to say publicly he won't support a wide-ranging transgender discrimination bill. In a Facebook post today, he cited equal protection and civil rights problems as well as unintended consequences. www.facebook.com/BrianLohse4I...

Trans liberation and disability justice are one fight.

I talked with Live Like the World is Dying host @margaret.bsky.social about preparedness, collective survival, and challenging ourselves "to let people be better."

A five-alarm fire for LGBTQ Iowans: Iowa House Judiciary Committee chair Steven Holt introduced a bill today w/many discriminatory provisions including removing gender identity from Iowa's civil rights act. www.legis.iowa.gov/legislation/... (my post in progress but won't be done tonight)

After Trump’s executive order laying off federal employees last week, Haskell Indian Nations University lost almost a third of its staff, leaving students without teachers.

I blame the following on the fact I am redeveloping a persuasion class, but lorde, why are we not pushing back on the definitional monopoly of “civic life.” There are so many different models…

“We need to speak on our own behalf and transform the narrative about why higher education is so important to the future of this country.” – @aaup.bsky.social President Todd Wolfson www.thenation.com/article/soci...

🚨 SCOOP: DOGE is seeking personal taxpayer data at IRS, sources tell me. 🚨 Trump admin is pushing IRS to agree to an MOU that would give DOGE access to granular data on every taxpayer, business and nonprofit in the country.

sounds like solidarity between scientists and humanists is timely…

Yep. Industrial schools, prison farms, poor farms, rehabilitation farms…..all of these were used as a way to cleave “dependent classes” into self sustaining individuals. Like why is he also talking about “reparenting.”

From a federal court decision blocking Trump's anti-trans healthcare order: "The Court cannot fathom discrimination more direct than the plain pronouncement of a policy resting on the premise that the group to which the policy is directed does not exist."

People who voted Trump who are feeling pissed off right now about broken promises are an organizing opportunity, not a gloating opportunity

notes from my current research: pre-psychiatry, 19thc “alienists” were researchers and practitioners to treat “insanity”— their name came from the belief “aliens” (patients) were “alienated from reality.” we could learn a lot from mad studies in this moment.

like what’s happening is an assault on your taken-for-granteds; your norms, your sense of reality in an explicit authoritarian way. maybe talk about that.

it’s super possible to not use ableist/sanist terms to describe the shitshow of national politics. for the sake of accuracy and cringe, try it out…
