Kristi Noem accompanied ICE on a raid this morning, styling a flak jacket to keep her safe in the extremely dangerous area of (checks notes) Arlington, Virginia

Former 🇺🇸 ambassador to Russia 👇🏽

la taco has always owned for culture and food but now they’re also doing impact journalism on the owner of the la times & how to respond to ice raids. this is the future of journalism. i’m not even in the country and i’m a subscriber.

Listen to Secretary Pete. And remember, these are our funds. These are our courts. And these are our streets.

Grassley was at Mar-a-Lago last night. My guess is that Trump is going to plug this funding hole with direct cash payments to farmers that voted for him rather than the old arrangement where the food actually served a purpose to feed hungry people around the world.

Tech bros cheering on the cuts to grant funding built businesses and wealth on the back of decades of university R&D work. Much of that knowledge was given away to the public. This is basic pulling-up-the-ladder nonsense via rewriting history. They owe the public, not the other way around.

DOGE plans to slash about as much ($4B) from NIH, and hence from universities and medical centers, as the government gave SpaceX ($3.8B) last year. It's not about the money and government "waste." It's never been about the money or government "waste." www.usatoday.com/story/money/...

I was in the room. Women serving in combat isn't some kind of DEI. It's well rooted in logic and Ash Carter saw that. Stephanie Carter knows better than anyone and read her take www.nytimes.com/2025/02/08/o...

Excellent explainer on why the NIH indirect rate cut matters, as well as why it is illegal.

🤷🏻

Oops 😬

Not could. Will. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

mind you, this "doge official" IS A FRESHMAN AT NORTHEASTERN

STEP 1: Donald does something stupid. STEP 2: Donald is surprised there are consequences. STEP 3: Donald backs down. STEP 4: Donald lies, claiming things already agreed to are new concessions he forced by the stupid thing he did. STOP 5: REPEAT

For all those making excuses or lessening the deleterious impact of Musk and Trump

Gonna launch myself into the sun.

Oh great, state-run media. Feels First Amendment might like a word. www.reuters.com/markets/weal...

One of my party facts is that according to polls, Americans believe foreign aid is about 25% of the federal budget and on average that it *should* be about 10%. The actual number is less than 1%. Foreign aid has long been a boogey man of the right, so it's not surprising they're vilifying it now.

Good for her! Billionaire Jennifer Pritzker donates Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Emil Bach House and neighboring home to Loyola University

DEI is when a woman or non-white person who is qualified for a job receives that job. The meritocracy is when a 19 year old gets to run the United States government because he posted the dankest memes

There has never been a larger gap in my (admittedly quite short) professional life between how lay folks and law profs are talking about what is happening in government right now. So much of what Trump is doing is just blatantly illegal — often in several ways at once.

This has been a very racist week

I used to work for an elected official as the person who answered their emails. I can tell you from personal experience, if even twenty or thirty people all call an official in a day, they start panicking. This stuff does help.

Pete Hegseth is the most unqualified nominee for Secretary of Defense in modern history. He should be rejected by the Senate.

Hey all -- just boosting the signal about current fundraising efforts for @chicagoreader.com. I know times are hard, but if you have a few bucks to spare, it would surely be appreciated! donorbox.org/save-the-chi...

The last lines of this hit home. www.theguardian.com/culture/2025...

So Elon's #DOGE is just a renamed USDS? "Sec. 3. DOGE Structure. The United States Digital Service is hereby publicly renamed as the United States DOGE Service (USDS) and shall be established in the Executive Office of the President."

This has always been the GOP's strategy: 1) Cut taxes for the wealthy & corporations by claiming they'll pay for themselves. 2) Explode the deficit. 3) Demand cuts to Social Security and Medicare. 4) Repeat. Don't let them get away with it.

Things were never great in this country, but I honestly never expected to see extortion normalized at the highest levels of government

With everything so seemingly terrible these days & no sign of anything remotely hopeful in the near future, I thought you might need this photo of a baby giraffe.

This says everything about the sad, misogynistic times we are living in: The new Congress is the first Congress to have *fewer* women than the previous one.

Well I never

one of the officers, michael donnelly, was also accused of attacking & threatening a protester in 2020. his case, like the bulk of misconduct complaints from protesters in 2020, didn’t lead to any findings against him. reporting from @invisible.institute: chicagoreader.com/news/police-...

Honor his memory by doing something strange, unraveling a riddle within yourself, and working on your favorite projects.

In 2020, I asked why so many Republicans had abandoned the values they had previously held. Still relevant. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

Shameful: www.nytimes.com/2025/01/14/u...

This is not the story. The story is Trump nominating a completely unfit person to run the defense department that he knows will be pliant and Senate Republicans making a choice to not give a shit. Hegseth didn't accomplish anything today.

What happens when two con men like Donald Trump and Elon Musk get together? They try to con each other. What else do they know how to do? Key & Peele actually did an informational video to prepare us for what the Trump-Musk partnership will look like. It's really worth watching, to prepare yourself.

Pete Hegseth may be the most unqualified nominee any president in modern political history has put up for any post. I just need to hear more information from reporters about why they would think that matters to members of Congress. Are members of Congress saying behind the scenes that they care?
