The crash is beginning in academia.

Science/academia are under siege. Slashed funding from NIH, NSF, and NASA, etc.—plus loss of Pell Grants—will cripple universities. Next, massive endowment taxes aim to deliver the final blow. Research and education are on the line. Call your representatives. Spread the word. Take action. #scicomm 🧪

A lesson for us all

Under fascism, no one is safe. Universities stayed quiet as the admin targeted DEI & foreign aid, censored research, etc. Now, they face devastating cuts to indirect cost rates, threatening research & operations. Silence won’t protect institutions. It won’t protect people; it never does.

THIS!!!

Archiving will be some of the most important work that we can do collectively over the next several years.

Everyone should read this great thread on the destructive capacity of what Elon and his minions have just captured.

As we watch all mention of diversity actively get scrubbed from the NIH website in real time it's important to know that, we were not taking over anything, we were just trying to exist. - Only 2% of NIH R01 grants are awarded to Black investigators. The goal is total erasure/elimination.

From a journalist friend: Just spreading the word. The CDC is purging data, so people should archive their favorite CDC datasets today, namely ones around race/ethnic diversity, LGBTQ, and reproductive health. Also health data involving climate. The youth risk behavior survey has already gone down.

It is simply not enough for universities to say, “Our grants & research offices are looking into how research will be affected by the latest directive.” University leaders must actively and very publicly make the case for the kind of work many of us do. The silence on this front is deafening.

🚨If you use public data products from the CDC or other US federal agencies 🚨 Download them NOW [This is how I’m spending my Friday]

Listening to RFK Jr.'s confirmation hearing, obviously, he shouldn't be confirmed in any capacity; however, I want to address the committee's lack of understanding of how much public health isn't individual choices but rather the social determinants of health. #RFKjr #HHS #healthequity #SDoH

Per an NIH source: “Discussions with colleagues have suggested that if the universities all come together and raise hell about the delays to funding caused by not holding meetings, that might move the needle. From every state. There are well-funded universities in red states that will be impacted.”

Philly & a Kendrick Super Bowl during black history month. Please prepare to be sick of me…might get Jalen tatted on my ass

I had a great meeting w/ our health sciences librarian for a project/paper I am working on this year and submitted another paper I've been working on for the last year. Now, if I can find a little more energy to work on this GIS analysis for this other paper, I'll call today a WIN!

ON JANUARY 20TH, READ MLK! READ ABOUT THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT! READ ABOUT RECONSTRUCTION! READ ABOUT JIM CROW! You want to do something for the good of history? Do something constructive and learn from the ancestors.

Martin Luther King wasn’t asking people to do community service. He was asking folks to liberate oppressed peoples.

A group of retired Black women in Philly gather weekly to sew period pads for girls in Africa. Along the way, they've also built a community here "We believe in each other and have faith in ourselves, and we have faith others are going to support us”

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. saw an 18.1% increase in homelessness this year, with more than 770,000 people counted as homeless.

For years, former Black Panthers have feared that the FBI is still keeping tabs on them decades after its notorious COINTELPRO program. Malik Rahim had never been able to prove he was targeted. Now, government docs show he was correct.

Planning a cross country move in the middle of a mercury Retrograde and preparing for prospectus was/is foolish, lol. This move has not gone according to plan at all!

Guess who is officially a PhD Candidate and ABD?!? There’s work to do, but I feel so much gratitude in getting to this point in my academic journey! Next stop, dissertation! #PhDchat #Academia

Outside of being a tired Population Health PhD student, I'm a film photographer. I mostly shoot 35mm film, but I've recently been dabbling with medium format. I've been reflecting on my time in New Orleans, and this is a great shot of Mardi Gras season. #photography IG @narrativesintheframe

As a Black scholar studying how anti-Blackness impacts health, I’m deeply concerned about what this upcoming administration means for evidence-based science and research funding. But my ancestors resisted, and so will I. We will keep telling the truth, no matter what. #HealthEquity #BlackAcademia

I just FaceTimed with my parents and feel so good about my decision to move closer in proximity to them. I’ve enjoyed New Orleans so much these past 3.5 years but Philly is home. Soon I’ll be ABD and can complete my dissertation anywhere since it’s all secondary data.

I sent my dissertation committee my dissertation proposal today! One step closer to ABD!!! #PhDchat #HealthEquity

Terrific piece summarizing a recent report: Every dollar of NIH research funding doubles in economic returns www.fiercebiotech.com/research/rep...

I have a B.S. in Social & Behavioral Health, M.S. in Social Policy, & Masters of Public Health (MPH). I’m currently getting my PhD in social, behavioral, and population sciences, in about a month I’ll be ABD! #blacksky

white supremacy, patriarchy, and unrealistic aspirations for extreme wealth/hoarding are a helluva drug bc folks voted directly against their interests. when looking for voting block scapegoats, leave Black folks tf alone. (IK other things played a role in how we got here)
