They’re not called Rare Earth Metals because they’re scarce, but because as a group of elements they took a long time to isolate. It’s an antiquated English use of rare meaning “widely distributed or isolated” that died in Victorian times.

IMO Derek - who is aphantasic - is doing the kind of rigorous experimental work that should have been done before all the big claims were made about aphantasia. Now the cat is out of the bag, we have to get researchers and the public to unlearn unsupported claims, which won’t happen.
