The 1923 Oregon legislature was colloquially known as the "Klan legislature" because the majority of members were either Klan members or sympathizers. One bill they passed required that history education be suitably patriotic, outlawing materials that spoke "slightingly" of the founders.

BREAKING: Nearly all USAID direct hires are being placed on leave tonight at midnight. My latest with Fatma Tanis at @npr.org: www.npr.org/sections/goa...

I wish more people knew about the 1920s Klan because they—perhaps more than European fascists—are the model for Trumpism. This is a good summary and a nice reminder that they do a lot of damage, but in the end, fascists always lose.

Possible measles exposures happened at various locations in San Antonio on Saturday, Feb. 15, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Summary of the CDA, ID Town Hall madness from last night -(R) State legislators hold a town hall -Turnout is higher than expected -Legislators begin to fillibuster their own town hall to avoid taking questions from a hostile crowd. -Woman loudly asks "Is this a town hall or a lecture?" (1/?)

I just wish that we actually cared about antisemitism in this country. But instead yall had congressional hearings vilifying students and faculty (of all races & ethnicities) protesting genocide and silence with actual sieg heiling by white suprmacists.

I’m not teaching this semester but if I was, I would use this thread as a model for conveying the stakes of the current moment. This is excellent teaching.

I am sad to share that all Retirement & Disability Research centers have been ordered to stop work. My fellowship will no longer exist, and the work of so many talented researchers and dedicated staff will be cut short. www.ssa.gov/news/press/r...

The young vote in Germany, by gender. 😳

One of my best friends is from a sleepy, wealthy small town in the south-west of Germany. He said, so many of my parents’ neighbours are rich and bored, with little to complain about, and they’ve radicalised themselves at dinner parties and online. In their aimlessness, they’ve bonded over hate.

Wow, Linke took Berlin-Neukölln. Stunning result for Berlin city politics

CNN plays a clip of Russian state TV praising Trump for being "in total alignment" with Putin

The guy who essentially just won the next chancellorship, Friedrich Merz, has been doing a press tour for the past week or so talking about how America under Trump can’t be trusted and promising to investigate Musk for meddling in the German election.

If you are clear-eyed, looking at America, and worried about democracy, the lesson is that half-measures and incrementalism are not going to cut it.

this is how the extreme right — a vocal minority in this country— affects change. they see politics not as some mt olympus but as everyday processes they are entitled to weigh in on. we gotta do the same. get your ass to your kid's school, county commish, township rep, community board, a town hall

THIS IS HOW YOU STAND UP: EEOC admin judge Karen Ortiz resisted an order to hand over all LGBT cases for “review” and told colleagues to resist too. She knows she’ll likely to be fired. “I can exist on cornflakes and community if it means that my soul is intact.” www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/u...

#Germany's federal criminal police office, not exactly known for over-counting such things, reports that at least 41,000 crimes with a right-wing extremist motive were committed in 2024, a 1/3 increase compared to 2023. 2023, with a 23% increase on 2022, had already marked an all-time high #farright

NO KINGS is extremely effective because it’s simple, an extremely widely held belief, and gets right to the core of Trump’s assault without having to use words lots of people don’t understand

Gregg is a former Marine and Forest Service ranger. He's saved the lives of hikers dangling off a cliff or going through cardiac arrest, and he's bravely fought forest fires to save small rural towns. 100% of his salary is paid by WA state. Elon fired him. Share his story.

Preliminary thoughts on the German election results so far: 1) Chasing the far right vote by demagoguing on migration has brought the CDU/CSU it's second worst performance in history. It's in first place, but it's a weaker result than anything Merkel posted.

Very interesting to look at the age distribution in the exit poll. The SPD which already did very poorly with young voters last time continues to loose further there - a party of pensioners. Interestingly, also huge losses for the Greens among young voters and massive gains for the Linke.

Before lawmakers swear an oath to the Constitution, perhaps they should be required to read it

These are brown shirts, and this is Nazi behavior. We are not in a fight between right and left anymore. This is a fight between Americans and those who would bend the knee to a king. If you care about the soul of this country, we have to stand for each other.

The casual rise of eugenics and breathless, credulous declarations of innate superiority of some people over others even among self-styled centrists is one of the creepiest and most alarming trends I’ve seen in a while.

A lot of Americans don't actually care much about policy, because they don't trust government to solve their problems. Instead, they just want someone to blame when they're struggling. And the GOP gives them scapegoats in spades.

Just think how much we could save by making up some federal agencies that don't exist then defunding them. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/03/t...

New — State Department employees have been instructed *not* to reply to OPM’s 5 bullet email, per an email I reviewed, saying leadership “will respond on behalf of the Department.”

This data is way too limited but this could be a cure for pancreatic cancer. How can we know if it is? And if it is, how can we access it? By funding scientific research. And with health agencies that can review data to ensure safety & efficacy, approve new treatments, & make sure they are covered.

1/ Town halls continue to go badly for GOP congresspeople, an ongoing thread: www.tiktok.com/t/ZT2Pc7F6y/

Interesting to see these big name universities absolutely crumble and cave — halting admissions, altering faculty labs’ websites, and basically being a bunch of collaborators. Almost like that’s what they were really about all along. Almost like those billions in endowments aren’t for education.

DOGE staffer Gavin Kliger has amplified Nick Fuentes & called for a pardon of Derek Chauvin. As of 2/7/25, Kliger was still employed by Databricks—backed by DOGE advisor Marc Andreessen’s VC firm, which has hired Daniel Penny (recently acquitted of manslaughter re: a Black man’s death) 2/7/25 1/

Something that wasn't brought to my attention until after publication is that GlomarResponder also made a lot of posts that appear to praise and defend Adolf Hitler.

TIL there’s a MacGyver episode in which he hunts down white supremacist Nazis who scheme to infiltrate the government over time to create an Aryan country

Here we have the so-called "Third Term Project," a campaign to change the American constitution -- in the same way that Vladimir Putin, who has been in power in Russia since 1999, changed the Russian Federation's constitution to serve as dictator for life -- to allow for a third term as POTUS. 1/7

This BETTER OUTRAGE EVERYONE DO YOU KNOW HOW HELPFUL AND NECESSARY THESE VISITS ARE??? CALL YOUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVES 202 224-3121 THIS IS WRONG !!!

This is a shamefully racist movement that should be resisted by every person of good will. @brian-goldstone.bsky.social’s forthcoming book is incredible and it’s honestly the archive’s loss (and the nation’s). www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/a...

I transcribed remarks from Steve Bannon at CPAC, about Jews and Israel. Video attached. It's a master class in how the far-right spreads blatant antisemitism, but disguise it by including Israeli Jews within the category of those threatened by perfidious rootless Jewish billionaires.

Running thread of people trying to normalize the sieg heil. It's not an "Elon gesture", it's not autism, it's not your heart going out, it's not parody or trolling. It's fucking despicable. Don't ever let this shit become normal. Fuck any excuse given, there is none. Zero tolerance. 1. Elon Musk

I don’t understand how there’s any debate about whether to characterize them as Nazis when they’re out here sieg heiling. It’s an absolute failure of messaging not to name and condemn this behavior, and build a narrative around it.

meanwhile we have white men liberal political commentators and pundits asking people not to be "hysterical" and "overreact"
