My brother had to get a covenant out of the deed when he bought his house in Portland that forbade its sale to a black person. He insisted on its removal as a condition for the sale.

They had those deeds in La Jolla, CA. Knew a Jewish WWII vet who still had his original, warning not sell to "Negroes or Jews." They were ruled unenforceable in 1948, persisted through the 50s & ruled unconstitutional in 1968. He figured he got the last laugh w a beautiful home near the beach

My guess is those were the standards for most school districts at that time. However pretty sure the Klan didn't show up at many churches across the nation. Also I expect the interpretation of that law was all consuming in that area.

Growing up in Oregon in the ‘80s and ‘90s, I never learned in school that Oregon had the largest KKK membership west of the Mississippi. I did learn that when Oregon became a state, it banned slavery, but I didn’t learn that it also banned Black people.

In 1869 a Swiss immigrant to Oregon, Kaspar Kubli, had a son who he named Kaspar K. Kubli, Jr. In 1921 that son joined the KKK because the group resonated with his conservative politics, and then in 1923 Kaspar K. Kubli became the Republican speaker of Oregon's "Klan legislature." Like, for real.

This is one of the more visually arresting images from Oregon's Klan era of the 1920s. It was not uncommon for the Klan to march into a Protestant church, offer a donation to the minister, and basically dare him to turn it down or ask them to leave.

In the 1920s Portland's mayor formed a 100-man vigilante force with guns, badges, and power of arrest. The names of the force were secret, but the Klan "advised him" on who he should deputize for these roles. The Portland Klan claimed that 150 members of the city police department were in the KKK.

In 1920s Pensacola, the Klan literally ran this town. I was just talking about this yesterday. There's a street named after TT Wentworth, Jr., and a museum. He had Indigenous artifacts from various parts of the world. His KKK history was kept under wraps until 2019.

Oregon is not a racist state. We are a majority of liberals that would never consider a Klan of any type. Eastern Oregon is mostly sparsely inhabited Republican area and have expressed wanting to join that part of our state to Idaho.
