✈️🌧️I got a tip Wednesday night that the federal hiring freeze affects the meteorologists who help air traffic controllers with weather reports for flights in and out of the Bay Area. They are down to 1 meteorologist & can't rehire the three vacancies. @kqednews.kqed.org www.kqed.org/news/1203333...

Before Trump took office, states that voted for him were on track to receive nearly three-quarters of clean energy investments from the Inflation Reduction Act. yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/03/clea...

From life-saving weather warnings and cancer treatments to tech breakthroughs, federally funded science drives progress. In an open letter, the AMS urges strong federal science funding to ensure our future. More: bit.ly/4j6rQGZ

NWS just announced a major reduction in upper-air (weather balloon) observations due to staffing shortages. Omaha and Rapid City losing balloon launches altogether, with launches cut in half at 6 other sites. Losing this many launches could affect severe weather forecasting and computer models.

And tonight, tomorrow, and every day is why we need NOAA/NWS. Kudos to these amazing meteorologists who work around the clock while short-staffed for the “protection of life and property and enhancement of the national economy. “

Not the storm event to be reducing NWS staff, weather balloon launches and NOAA resources

Good to see that the 3 probationary crew members of the NOAA Hurricane Hunters that were fired have been rehired. But two other non-crew members that got fired did not get rehired. www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...

The outlines of a White House plan to produce a government science report that highlights the "benefits" of climate change is coming together. The intent is to expand presidential power, target regulations and fight litigation filed against fossil fuel companies. www.eenews.net/articles/tru...

Scoop: ~33% of NWS offices no longer have sufficient staffing to safely keep 24/7 operations. Critically understaffed @nws.noaa.gov offices now include: Boston Miami Houston Omaha Wichita Kansas City Marquette, MI Sioux Falls, SD Rapid City, SD Cheyenne, WY www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

More fallout from the indiscriminate NWS firings: "Effective immediately, and until further notice, the [NWS] is temporarily suspending some weather balloon launches in Albany, New York, and Gray, Maine, due to a lack of Weather Forecast Office (WFO) staffing." www.weather.gov/media/notifi...

In addition to being an atmospheric scientist, I'm also a software developer. I've been repairing computers (SW and HW) since I was a teen. When I faced a computer, whether my own or someone else's, with a software problem, I would look through the logs, identify the problem, and fix THAT PROBLEM.

My colleagues at NOAA said this move has been “paused” for the WPC, for now.

NEW: The Trump admin has informed NOAA that two buildings that are critical for weather forecasting will have their leases canceled. If this comes to pass, it's a really big deal. Includes weather fcst nerve center in College Park, Md.: www.axios.com/2025/03/03/d...

The Bay Area weather radar (KMUX) has been out of service for more than 24 hours now. An expensive broken part needs to be replaced and specially ordered, but that may not be possible due to ongoing freeze on government credit card spending, I’ve been told.

How it started / How it’s going.

“...to better understand things like extreme weather, which impact communities all across the United States.” "All of this excitement and energy and new ideas and technological advances and skills that they bring are lost from the outcome of this.” said Labe

It’s been hard to come up with words regarding the situation at NWS/NOAA the last few days. Roughly 1k meteorologists have been fired, and this will have profound impacts. I just got back from two days in DC fighting for NOAA/NWS. I met with over 12 lawmakers. I am very mad.

Words of encouragement and support left by folks in the National Weather Center outside the entrance to the Norman NWS, Storm Prediction Center, and National Severe Storms Laboratory offices. 💙 It’s not just a job. We are a family, a community.

Pertinent information marked in red: NOAA. Local meteorologist, well-known for caring for his local area. Bad weather warning 5 days in advance. Takeaways: DO NOT LET THEM DESTROY NOAA and NWS. DO NOT LET THEM ELIMINATE LOCAL PEOPLE. Or just go look at the sky yourself and pray you're right.

Something that deserves recognition: At federal labs such as NOAA’s NSSL, ESRL, or EMC, most employees are first hired on as contractors through a company or cooperative institute. After several years, many get “promoted” by being hired as Feds. These are the “probationary employees” getting fired

I have written a short statement responding to mass firings today of #NOAA / National Weather Service (#NWS) staff (which were concentrated among recent hires as well as highly experienced staff who had recently been promoted). Please see below screenshot & below for full text.

Every single individual in the weather enterprise should be utterly furious today.

Probationary employees across @NOAA and the @NWS are being terminated today, including those in mission-essential roles. My own wife is among them, essential to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center's 24/7 critical mission of seismic monitoring and tsunami prediction to protect the public.

The hammer fell on NOAA/NWS this afternoon. 😭💔 There were no exceptions. All probationary employees.

I just got fired from NWS . This email is all I know. Read if you want.

All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.

Several confirmed terminations of probationary employees across NOAA today. These are good, hardworking, dedicated public servants working to better our country and its people whose lives, careers, and livelihoods are being destroyed w/o cause. Absolutely heartbroken. This is wrong.

Update: I just got done meeting with SenTedBuddNC. He is on the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. He was unaware of the potential cuts to NOAA/NWS. He told me he would work with me to fight for the NWS and NOAA. He asked about my weather page etc #ncpol
