Sitting in my history class at 14 explaining to everyone, including the teacher, what happens to religious minorities in Iraq every time Iraq goes to war, and having them be baffled that there were Christians, Jews, and other religious minorities there left me with permanent psychic damage.

Oh Jesus, yeah. I was just starting high school when the Iraq war started and granted that I was far more politically aware than most people around me, but even I can very clearly remember just how fucking batshit that entire national conversation was.

Normally I’m like ‘dudes like this should not have been allowed to watch Her’ but this specific dude definitely should be forced to watch Her.

The nice thing about it is it’s a charcoal grill so really the ‘still works’ is just a matter of whether the frame is stable and the metal isn’t rusted out. Neither of which are a problem with this one!

We’re pretty certain they just put it out this morning because there’s no way that thing lasted through Father’s Day weekend on the floor at that hardware store.

New grill, Jake for scale.

(That said if this is a work thing and your company wants suggestions, I’m happy to consult on better software options for them - for a consulting fee of course 😂)

Agh yeah I unfortunately can’t help you there without recommending alternatives that cost money đŸ˜©

Do you need the tools acrobat provides? If not, you can just open PDFs in your browser (chrome, Firefox, etc) by hitting cntl + o.

I can’t believe I didn’t think about that immediately, what with being a recovering privacy engineer and all but holy shit that is an information security and privacy *nightmare* of untold proportions. Jesus fucking Christ.

Seriously, I want to see more of Chad’s tattoo!

I’m crying and it’s not from tear gas, holy shit.

Have you played the Dune or Alien TTRPGs? I bought the GM’s guide for both recently and have been thinking about putting together a campaign.

Well thank fuck I don’t live anywhere near a Wegman’s or this information would be bad for my health.

Also at The Grove, a camera crew was following The Situation around and the boom op beamed me in the forehead with the boom pole. I’m actually not entirely sure why anyone goes to The Grove, especially after the Crate & Barrel with the really good discount section closed.

Honestly living in Hollywood for five years is basically just a long string of minor celebrity interactions. Like, one time I held Jeremy Piven’s Frenchie in a restaurant while he ran to his car to get something.

Also, bandages! Even in good walking shoes, blisters can form if your feet sweat, you wear the wrong socks, etc. If you can bring actual blister dressings, even better. It’s also a small thing that you can keep lots of in you pockets/bag to replace or hand out to comrades if needed!

What is it with medical providers and just, not doing the basic things that need to be done vis-a-vis insurance coverages and whatnot? I had to tell a dentist to go pound sand today after they pulled some shit that made it clear they didn’t even bother checking insurance before quoting me prices.

Jake and I just both had the most “ewwwwww noooo” reaction to this. I’m so sorry friend.

Organizatio is just fellatio from a person with a Type A personality.

Actually it’s entirely likely that vehicle is not even street legal in California. It certainly couldn’t pass an emissions check. I wouldn’t be shocked if they just refuse to release it to him since he can’t just drive away in it without driving it illegally again.

If you look at what Bukele has said about the Zero Idleness policy at CECOT, we’re already sending people to be enslaved in El Salvador. How long until some ghoul decides we should cut out the ‘sending’ part and just enslave them here? 🙃

Not to say the people where I live now aren’t incredible (they absolutely are), but we can all learn a thing or two from the way Angelenos take care of their own.

Discipline without diversity of tactics is just making it easy for your opponent to predict your actions. You need both.

As context, some years back the LAPD’s union responded to then LA-mayor Eric Garcetti being mildly critical of them by telling him to remember who provides security for his house. That’s what we mean when we say no one controls them. They do shit like this often, and politicians always back down.

Well, this morning it’s more being upset with myself for internalizing the idea that I have to just keep Doing, without ever letting anyone see that I have exhausted my capacity to Do, and need support. Which, stems from long periods where I didn’t have support, but is also unhealthy.

This isn’t a criticism of bsky, it’s just a different user experience and not everyone wants that. People need to do better at understanding social media is a subjective experience, and what worked for them doesn’t have to work for others. There’s no moral judgement there, just preferences.

I moved to bsky when it was still invite-only and it took active work to start engaging, growing my following list so I saw posts I was interested in, finding feeds, etc. I would have bounced off it entirely if I didn’t have a few friends here. A lot of folks don’t want to do that work.

About those goggles: so-called nonlethal rounds (such as “rubber bullets”) can take out an eye. Make sure your goggles are ballistics-rated. A handy article (I am not affiliated with this site): safetyglassesusa.com/blogs/news/h... Some appropriately-specified models are less than $20.

If the military really thinks they’re just going to waltz in and take some photos of a pacified LA, they’ve got another thing coming. And that’s not even counting average people who just aren’t going to stand for it.
comment in response to post
And to be clear, this isn’t an “oh my god LA has so many violent gangs” post, but it’s also naive to pretend the largest city on the west coast doesn’t have elements of organized crime present who would absolutely join the fight. And like insurgents in Iraq, they already know the area.

I didn’t say anything about the amount of damage, I said either one will potentially kill you. But also I’m a protest medic and a certified Wilderness First Responder, so I’m gonna disregard your promises in favor of my actual training on crushing vs penetrating injuries.

You are less likely to die *if the rubber bullets are used correctly.* The correct use is to shoot them at the ground so they ricochet and hit with the force of a baton, not a bullet. Shoot that at someone’s chest and that’s massive soft tissue/organ trauma. Hit their skull and it’ll break.
