Things I think folks can learn to say, get comfortable saying, and show others are okay to say, that would genuinely improve the state of the world: "I didn't know that" "I was wrong" "What does that word mean?" "Can you explain this?" "I don't think I understand" "I don't know" "I'm confused"

Global foreign direct investment grew again in 2023 after declining the previous year. Inward direct investment climbed $1.75 trillion, or 4.4 percent, reaching a record $41 trillion, according to the IMF. U.S. extended its lead as the top destination for FDI. content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USI...

Please spread the word - a great opportunity for an early-career researcher with an interest in foreign, security and defence policy to work with @centreeuropeanref.bsky.social's outstanding team, getting exposure to experts & policy-makers in London, Brussels & Washington.

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

Economist is one of the roles with the fastest rate of offshore growth among U.S. multinationals. #econsky

Only six homes have been fully rebuilt in the county after more than 2,000 structures burned in Maui’s wildfires.

@itsafronomics.bsky.social speaking absolute truth right now: “There is no moment in history, whether trembling or triumphant, where community hasn’t mattered." To our entire Sadie Collective community, we value you more than you know 💜 #SACE2025 #EconSky

@femmeeconomics.bsky.social starting off the kickoff with beautiful words from Ijeoma Umebinyuo: “Start now. Start where you are. Start with fear. Start with pain. Start with doubt. Start with hands shaking. Start with voice trembling ... with what you have. Just... start.” #SACE2025 #EconSky

REPOST if you support our federal workforce and know how dedicated they are to their jobs. Show them you appreciate them!

In light of today's TTS layoffs and general federal unease, I want to mention that my team at New America, the New Practice Lab, just opened five roles across several disciplines - policy, learning + evaluation, design, product, and data engineering. Quick thread about what we do, and how we work:

The Inter-American Development Bank is forming a poverty group, with multiple staff positions. Lead Specialist jobs.iadb.org/job/Economic... Specialist jobs.iadb.org/job/Economic... Great opportunity to help shape the organization's operational & analytical work around poverty reduction.

Inflation picked up unexpectedly in January. This was the biggest one-month increase in overall consumer prices since August 2023, and the biggest one-month increase in core prices since April 2023. #NumbersDay

Former Commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on here! Welcome, @ericagroshen.bsky.social! If you care about workers, employers, jobs, and the federal statistical system, an essential follow.

This is officially a @capitalweather.bsky.social fan account for the next 36 hours! I love how nerdy the team gets about weather and learn something new from them with every storm. ❄️

New — The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) was told this week by DOJ that they'd lose their funding if the org didn't remove any mentions of LGBTQIA+ issues from their public materials, I've learned. Staff were told they need to deadname trans kids in their reports to comply.

Timeline cleanse! Just got off a prep call for the Sadie Collective’s conference & it’s going to be SO inspiring and energizing! The next gen of economists is spectacular. 🥹 Kicks off 2/14; tickets less than the cost of brunch (just $10 for high schoolers); and 🎟️ covers ALL events! 📉📈 #EconSky

My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com

“Over 80 per cent of global merchandise trade is on most-favoured-nation basis.” - WTO DG Dr. Ngozi 🏋🏾‍♂️ #EconSky 📉📈

Will repeat this forever, but if there's a US foreign policy program that deserves unambiguous support from a global health/humanitarian/economic/political/every angle you can think of perspective, it's PEPFAR. Sharing the economists letter of support here: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F... #Econsky

Nice blog from former CEA chair, @jaredb-econ.bsky.social, on why we should continue to push for facts (and necessary nuance) in trade policy debates—with nods to Krugman, Obstfeld, and Bernanke. The only way out is through. 🏋🏾‍♂️ #EconSky📉📈

I'm sorry, what? How do you deport a citizen? I feel like you ... can't?*

Alert: @femmeeconomicss (two s’s at the end) is impersonating me. Please take 10 seconds to report the account. 🙏🏾

New and important: we built a federal expenditure tracker. All expenditure line items that are available on the Daily Treasury Statement. USAID was zeroed out on 1/28 and has been at zero ever since. www.hamiltonproject.org/data/trackin... #EconSky

The Society of Government Economists @sgeecon.bsky.social welcomes submissions of individual papers and sessions for its annual conference to be held on Friday, April 4, 2025 at American University Washington College of Law. Submit by this Wednesday February 5th: www.sge-econ.org/sge-2025-ann...

(1/3) Some Early Lessons from the Trade War of February 1-3, aka the Groundhog Day trade war #1 The good news. The US govt decided *not* to levy the largest tax increase in a generation, which would have been very distortionary, hurting production, employment, and growth across North America.

We are seeing some impact on reproducibility efforts with the transition to the new US administration. For now, I suggest that you make backups of any data that required you to actively interact with the Federal government, as there may be a delay in response times.... #openscience

If there is any doubt that tariffs are passed through to consumers, the cost of propane to heat my house just went up by the amount of the tariff

New post live on Empirical Truths! Very, very, very few of us can credibly say we didn’t or don’t or won’t benefit from federal social safety net funding--this post breaks down some of the many, many ways our lives are entwined with federal spending.

“For the typical American household, the tariffs will mean a loss of about $1,200 in purchasing power, according to the Budget Lab at Yale University, a nonpartisan research center.” www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

As a PSA, all federal API endpoints (FBI, USASpending, BLS, Census) are still functioning and it's just the websites that are wonky. So if you can't find something on a website, try pulling it from the API directly.

while The Horrors persist, let us celebrate less horrors overall…. because all three mega fires in Los Angeles are finally 100% contained!!

Reupping this trade model run on 25% MEX, 25% CAN, and 10% PRC cross sector import tariffs. Because…they’re back!!!
