One of my favorite topics to teach, because it makes the students understand how knowledge is constructed and built on earlier discoveries and measurements, and why details matter

Jeffries: hey the GOP controls the government, absolutely nothing i can do, gonna work on my personal book tour Sanders: brb i am going to personally barnstorm strategic GOP house districts and try to peel off 2 votes so we can block Trump's cuts to Medicaid www.commondreams.org/news/bernie-...

“Don’t criticize my friends” is the weakest argument for the poor state of American journalism

$200 million taxpayer dollars spent on “tell me I’m pretty” ads to stroke his own ego, while he fires people to “save money.” Sociopathic.

Thought I wouldn’t need to post this because it would make the rounds but I’m not seeing it in the TL so here’s a #GiftLink from the only coverage I’ve seen that Joy Ann Reid has been fired by MSNBC www.nytimes.com/2025/02/23/b...

I would say remotely competent historians understand that major events in history are historically shaped by men born into wealth and power and lots of them were idiots. (Caligula: psychopathic dumbass!)

No. The reporters are part of the problem. It’s not faceless management or people upstairs. It’s the chummy reporters who are part of a system of lying to the public and protecting their friends from criticism just like bad cops.

The AMS is temporarily opening its career services to all who need them, regardless of membership status, and offering dues waivers and meeting registration fee reductions for those impacted by job loss due to changes in the government. Read more: bit.ly/4gRiHAk

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office. Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc. Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

Sure would be nice if the U.S. continued funding stuff like “vaccines for pancreatic cancer.”

Worst. Episode. EVER.

Today's extract from Serving the Reich. What makes it worse is that I don't even need to add any explanatory comment, do I?

You have died of procedural norms.

BREAKING — States attorneys general lead by @newyorkstateag.bsky.social were just granted a preliminary injunction in their case against DOGE. The team cannot access Treasury Department payment systems or data while the lawsuit proceeds. Major.

Judge Advocates General. He’s fired the top military lawyers in each service.

So they removed the black chairman of the Joint Chiefs in the middle of his 4-year tour, without cause, and they're seeking to replace him with a white **retired** Air Force three-star general who lacks the requisite experience as a service chief or combatant commander? Huh, how about that

Please help get the word out to our friends who were working in the Federal Government: Some friends & I created this site to track the impacts of the Trump Admin's attack on the federal service, and we're trying to gather as many stories as possible. trumpcostsamerica.com

I'm gonna keep reposting examples of people not taking shit because it's important for us to see that you can, simply, reject the shit. Say "Uh... no no no, we will not be tolerating that."

A massive, self-inflicted wound on American higher education.

Because…?

After the Brown v. Board decision, white people across the South opened hundreds of private schools. 70 years later, most of the ones still open in Alabama’s Black Belt remain overwhelmingly white. In this town, one school keeps kids divided. (Published May 2024)

it’s so funny to be like “we don’t need diverse spies”

#teslatakedown I made some protest art.

The cybersecurity lead for VA.gov was fired last week. He tells WIRED that the Veterans Affairs digital hub will be more vulnerable without someone in his role.

This is of course an utterly false statement made by someone who does not know what he is talking about. There's a lot of that these days.

Here's the text of a letter sent out this morning by the acting NIH Director to all staff:

another thing every other president in history would be impeached for just happened

I've noticed that they 'get' uniform electric fields much easier when they've seen this... #iteachphysics

This is in fact a real picture and it will work nicely in the ads next year about the military families devastated by Elon's illegal firings.

Looks like @nytimes.com has stealth-edited this to add Evans' affiliation with Young Republicans. No correction or update note. I don't think I've ever worked with a single editor who would let me get away with that but it seems to happen regularly over there.

happy friday! just leaving this here...

It's blatantly obvious that the NYT finds Republicans to interview by calling up their Republican Party contacts and asking for someone "normal" to get quotes from, and their failure to disclose that they always interview party apparatchiks is a conscious choice

Ready fire aim

Please read and share. But especially share with folks that might not realize how critical Section 504 is to so many people. I tried to write a simple clear explanation at the break. I hope it reaches some people who aren't already on our side. Gift link: www.startribune.com/why-are-repu...

How many federal workers would DOGE need to fire to make up for Musk not paying his fair share of taxes? Answer: 677,000. That's 44% of the entire non-DoD federal workforce. Again, this power grab is not about the budget. It’s about politics.

NSF put our names back up on the PAEMST website, but not our bios which are now under review. I am certain that the boxed part of bio is going to be erased. The government is literally erasing our stories.

Did the @nytimes.com really quote the mf-ing communications director of the Houston YOUNG REPUBLICANS as if he were just some random young Black person who likes Trump? Cause it sure looks like it.

Oh great. On the week when I assign a problem set for my class to figure out what we would have to do to prevent the asteroid 2024 YR4 from impacting the Earth in 2032 new observations drop the probability of impact to 0.28%. Thanks, astronomers.

Here's a great example of a major company scrubbing any reference to diversity. In 2023, Coca-Cola said that 42% of its employees were women and 49% were people of color. In the 2024 10-K filed today, any reference to those numbers were gone.

Wow

Guys...

Sure glad nothing in the economy depends on the postal service
