While the Trump Admin withholds essential information and cuts CDC staff, the escalating bird flu epidemic endangers U.S. farmworkers, food supplies & the general public. The CDC must resume communication about avian influenza to protect public health: biologicaldiversity.org/w/news/press...

The latest H5N1 outbreaks show the dangers of putting too many eggs in too few baskets. This year alone, 196 avian flu outbreaks have impacted nearly 29 million birds—and 76% of affected egg-laying hens were concentrated on just 10 massive egg farms. www.foodandpower.net/latest/egg-p...

#BirdFlu poses an urgent and growing threat to the nation’s health, food supply, and economy that cannot be overcome if essential public health information is withheld or obscured. FACT strongly supports this call for more transparency about bird flu and other health threats.

Last week's report of a 3rd spillover event from birds to dairy cattle also shows the importance of active surveillance. Waiting for samples from sick cattle to be sent and tested did not detect these events. What does this suggest about beef cattle on feedlots w/o active surveillance?

3rd #birdflu spillover reported in Arizona dairy herd. USDA began saying spillover was a rare unique event and eradication was the goal to now new spillovers are not unexpected in less than a year. www.cidrap.umn.edu/avian-influe...

#H5N1 #birdflu's march through California's dairy herds has slowed but never halted. Nearly 76% of the state's herds — 745 in total — have been infected so far. #USDA confirmed 1 more today. Cumulative national total: 968 in 16 states. www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-po...

If you have heard about the new strain of #H5N1 #Birdflu spilling into cattle and do not understand what it means, I suggest reading this excellent report from the US department of agriculture. I have summarized key point below TLDR: "Houston we have a problem" www.aphis.usda.gov/sites/defaul...

Bird flu is running out of control. It was 1st detected in U.S. dairy cattle just last year. USDA said it was a rare event for the flu to jump from birds to dairy cattle. We just learned that 6 dairy herds in Nevada have a different flu strain indicating a separate jump. Beef cattle are likely next.

With a 2nd detected jump of #birdflu from birds to dairy cattle (something USDA insisted was unlikely) what is the chance that beef cattle are not becoming infected. We only know about the 2nd jump because of active surveillance of bulk milk. Who is looking at beef feedlots?

The D1.1 genotype is the one that was responsible for the death in the US in December. www.cidrap.umn.edu/avian-influe...

Feed additives are not a silver bullet. We can't "clean coal" our way out of fossil fuels & we can't avoid the reality that too many cows are driving emissions AND causing widespread harm to watersheds & wildlife. We need LESS cattle for any of this to work. Read: medium.com/center-for-b...
