Today's extract from Serving the Reich. What makes it worse is that I don't even need to add any explanatory comment, do I?

"These kinds of shocks are going to lead to a mass exodus … for minorities in particular.” For my latest @science.org story, I spoke with early career researchers who have been affected by the federal upheaval and are concerned about what it means for their future. www.science.org/content/arti...

🚨BREAKING: Federal Court GRANTS sweeping nationwide injunction against Trump DEI executive orders finding that they violate First and Fifth Amendments to the Constitution. A huge victory for @democracyforward.org and its clients. A stinging loss for Trump. Visit www.democracydocket.com for details.

It's right behind me isn't it #ostracod

PLOS has issued a statement on recent US Executive Orders and scientific integrity. We are determined to stand firmly behind our mission, our values and our principles, and against any attempt at censorship or undermining of the core principles of scientific inquiry. plos.io/3D4O8cH

‼️The US-based @ipcc.bsky.social technical support unit (TSU) for Working Group 3 Co-Chairs has been terminated, and the US won’t be attending next week’s IPCC meeting where the AR7 chapter outlines will be approved. More by @afreedma.bsky.social here:

"You screwed people": Inside the National Science Foundation’s firing of 168 workers👇

PRI deserves your support regardless, but this is a personal one. The museum was the first to feature me in an exhibit, alongside among other women in the field as part of Daring to Dig. In a field rife with transphobia and "boys will be boys" shit that needs to change, PRI is pushing for better.

The amazing brach gallery will make a humble brach lover cry with joy! 😀😀😀 The brand new Chengjiang Fossil Site Museum

@science.org just published this article about the Paleontological Research Institution and its importance in this time of financial crisis for the institution. Please share widely as donations in any amount can make a real difference in the short-medium term. ⚒️🧪🦑 www.science.org/content/arti...

Happy Publication Day to me! 🎉😱🥹🧿 Between Two Rivers: Ancient Mesopotamia and the Birth of History is officially out! It’s a history of the region through objects found in an ancient museum in Princess Ennigaldi-Nanna’s palace, and I hope you all like it 💛 lnk.to/BetweenTwoRi...

NEW: Two weeks ago gov't IT experts warned us that the worst case scenario would be if DOGE got full admin access to agency systems. We can report at at least one agency DOGE has unfettered "god mode" access. Our latest: www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...

Snail fact 2/19/2025- Did you know that there are over 40k species of snail? What am I going to do? I can't keep up guys

Syracuse is looking for a humanities post-doc in Trans diaspora studies. It is a nice area and university. www.sujobopps.com/postings/108...

Welcome to the Bluesky account for Stand Up for Science 2025! Keep an eye on this space for updates, event information, and ways to get involved. We can't wait to see everyone #standupforscience2025 on March 7th, both in DC and locations nationwide! #scienceforall #sciencenotsilence

Your frequent reminder that the New York Times, in addition to being a Vichy press organ for the American Nazi Party, is institutionally transphobic and has profited off the suffering of trans people. www.assignedmedia.org/breaking-new...

Shot: “In most major fields of science, NSF funds over 50 percent of basic research at U.S. institutions . . . Significantly cutting NSF’s budget would cripple America’s ability to sustain its technical workforce, economic competitiveness, and scientific leadership.” cra.org/nsf-budget-c...

"This feels like the early days of the pandemic, except there's less I can do about it", a colleague told me yesterday. Yep. One thing you *can* do is outreach. My sense is that the majority of the country doesn't yet understand the scale or the stakes of what is happening. We have to tell them:

🪨⚒️ #earthscience #geoscience

National Science Foundation is being gutted today. Please support these folks and make some noise about this. 🧪

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut. This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

School play gets canceled for "inappropriate content". In response students write [REDACTED], their own anti-censorship play skewering the school district, sells out performances, and ultimately takes gold at the Lenaea High School Theatre Festival. www.kqed.org/arts/1397192...

This commission statement refers to people with Autism, ADHD, asthma, auto-immune disease, and chronic illness as a “dire threat to the American people and our way of life”. This is a manifesto against disability. This is the language of eugenics.

i would love to spell out “climate programs” as what they are: -helping local communities stay safe from floods and fires -grants for farmers and small businesses -programs to maintain our electrical grids, drinking water, roads, and bridges -funding for public transportation in urban & rural areas

🚨 The Trump official currently dismantling USAID was caught in a secret meeting with a group of pro-Russian separatists in the Balkans. Those he met with are under American sanctions for trying to restart the Bosnian war in the name of Christian nationalism. www.propublica.org/article/usai...

If anyone has been in touch with press covering the NIH situation broadly (firings, funding freeze etc), please encourage them to cover the sinister way in which HHS is preventing grant review and funding from happening, by blocking posting to the Federal Register.

Or: "Ecologists discover palaeontology (and historicity of biology) 200 years after Cuvier" nsojournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... Remember my words: this is just a tip of the iceberg of rebuilding of the ecological theory through its integration with palaeontology 🧪 #Macroecology

Today, the USDA lost experts in Psylloidea, Thysanoptera, Cerambycidae, Hymenoptera, Pseudococcidae, and Malacology. This is a devastating loss of expertise, occuring without warning. Their union's official statement on the issue can be found here: aginspectors.org/2-14-2025-a-... #entomology 🧪

If you're an entomologist who lost your position in this nonsense, please message me. If you're an organization seeking a taxonomist or a broadly trained entomologist, reach out. I'm also looking for professors seeking PhD students, globally. #entomology 🧪
