Therapy to make the time until you "get there" more tolerable, then? A perfectly good reason in my mind.

Ja :-)

The idea of adversarial collaboration sounds good to me. Is that something that is regularly done or just an idea that never really took off?

It's quite ironic that these guys actually do have a unique and very interesting perspective on one aspect of China which they can never disclose, of course. Sitting on a genuinely interesting story while spouting obvious crap must suck.

There's a little worm standing on a little tower with a little umbrella under its little arm. A little storm blows the little worm off the little tower.

While we're at it here's an umbrella themed Hessian twister. Steht e Wermsche uff'm Termsche mit'm schermsche unnerm Ärmsche kommt e Stermsche bläst's Wermsche vom Termsche.

The channel is called "World hits in Hessian"

Here is umbrella "Reeschescherm" sung in Hessian German. A good place to start if you want to learn Hessian. youtu.be/yZ0w1ux4EGU?...

We are indeed not equipped to understand these processes but we are equipped to have experiences that make us feel as if we do. Whether these experiences are valuable or mere illusions is another question. This is me trying to "say it without saying it" 😂

Yup...and then making all the places, people and things that do make America great off limits.

Are you being sarcastic here? There are tons of those already. "The real Xinxiang THEY don't want you to see" "We went to XJ and where shocked!" etc....
comment in response to post
So basically they are saying "it's still less than 20!" 😂

Thank you for that. 👍

I love that the exchange DOES happen, that's what makes science great and I can also appreciate a bit of snark and sarcasm...

As a lay(-ish) person who is interested in the topic following the different camps can be very frustrating. I really don't know what to make of your open ended question. In your opinion and with the corrected data, what should the "overall message" be? Does it warrant another correction?

Thanks for the article. Any research coming out of China shares the same COI in addition to other possible COIs, namely government control of research. As with other COIs it might or might not get in the way of good research but it is always there.

This might sound like a conspiracy theory but this can be seen in the context of Chinese soft power propaganda. There is a push for presenting Chinese medicine as an alternative to "western medicine". During COVID they pushed a herbal "remedy" called lianhua qingwen.

Exactly! And you can be sure that the poor guy begged his parents to let him keep his shaggy look. He's facing a tough time at school.

"Acupuncture has emerged as an effective adjunctive treatment for depression, it regulates neurotransmitters involved in mood regulation and modulates the activity of specific brain regions associated with emotional processing, as evidenced by neuroimaging and biochemical studies."Has it? Does it? 😂

Not from Taiwan. Just checked out her Wikipedia page. Fascinating. Thank you! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoshiko...

That's Chinese, not japanese. From Taiwan, probably. Nice discovery nonetheless :-).

Fidos Freiheitsdrang. Fritten and More. Gekauft!
comment in response to post
comment in response to post
"Freiheitsdrang Fritten" könnte gut so eine Hipster Frittenschmiede heißen.

It was great! Luther, Montana. Yay for Freiheitsdrang!

I did not write that! Your post reminded me of the Schnitzelbank trauma and I finally googled it.

No. What that shows is that this cave belonged to a mammoth groomer.
comment in response to post
Can you explain in simple terms what that means? I have an idea but I'm not so sure.
comment in response to post
Haven't thought about it in a long time. It was 34 years ago. Thanks to your post I googled it today and found it jlupub.ub.uni-giessen.de/bitstreams/1...

We had one of those when I went to highschool for a year in Montana. Of course I was selected to explain what the tradition of the "Schnitzelbank" was all about. I had never heard of it but my teacher made it clear to all that I must be the only german who doesn't...

We're not as efficient as you might think. We're way funnier than you might think, "the great outdoors" to us literally is anywhere not inside our houses. Dress like you plan to climb Everest and you'll fit in in most situations.

The shock people are experiencing does remind me a little bit of that of people who work in China for the first time expecting some form of order and mostly getting anarchy.

Yes, but summoning my "inner stoned fifteen year old" who would go "whoa!" at the idea is the hard part. No snark. I like that guy.

On speaking, reading and writing Chinese and having Chinese friends and having worked in China. Why shouldn't China have these things?
