THE SCIENCE OF PARENTING: this week's excellent essay is by @sylviapperry.bsky.social telling us why it's important to talk about race and racism with our children www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-...

Does smartphone use make people feel lonelier? Or does loneliness predict smartphone use? We combined experience sampling data with smartphone usage data to examine the bidirectional association between well-being and smartphone use over time. Published in @apajournals.bsky.social Emotion! 🧵 👇

Every donation makes a huge difference in making these critical protests possible.

Just donated to @standupforscience.bsky.social to help this massive organizing effort. If you have the means and inclination, you can donate at standupforscience2025.org/donate/

My dream: getting asked to review brief reports, occasionally My reality: getting asked to review empirical novels, frequently

Is the hardest part of being a symposium chair changing to the new speaker’s slides between talks?

Happy Black History Month

You can always tell the quality of a talk based on the percentage of your jokes that get laugh—wait that’s not a commonly used metric?

Grateful to be well caffeinated and hydrated at the LGBTIQ+ preconference for #SPSP2025 today! During a time in the US where trans and nonbinary folks are being actively attacked and attempted to be erased by our government, having this space and sharing this research feels like a protest 🩵🩷🤍🩷🩵

Now is the time to Stand Up for Science! 🔬🩺🧠 Links are below. March 7 is the date. 📣Organize, march, speak up and let your colleagues, friends, & neighbors know. @standupforscience.bsky.social 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇

Still wondering how Indirect Funding (F&A) works, and why it's so important for research institutions? Check out this great video from the Association of American Universities: #standwithscience #standupforscience2025 @standupforscience.bsky.social 🧪 🤝 🧬 🐟🎸 🍎

Great explanation of how cutting indirect costs to universities will cause irreparable harm to scientific research in the U.S. Please share broadly with folks who may not get how these costs support the research that has brought us medical, scientific, economic, and social progress for decades.

New guest post! Excluding "careless" responses is a routine practice in many contexts. But if careless responding itself is an outcome of the variables of interest, that may actually cause trouble.

In the midst of the chaos and feeling like the world is burning down, what’s something that is bringing you joy? Mine are all these wonderful critters I’ve gotten to meet in recent weeks :-) Joy is its own protest—we can’t let them take that from us too.

Just a reminder that Germany was the center of scientific progress until the Nazis suppressed, drove away, or killed all the non-Nazi scientists.

How much Elon Musk makes from the government a day: $8 million. How much a senior on Social Security gets a day: $65 Guess which budget Musk and Trump want to cut?

Ukraine got into a war because Russia invaded them, demanding they give up independence. The only way for Ukraine to not go into war was bowing down to Putin and forfeiting freedom. As Clausewitz said, “The aggressor is always peace-loving… he would prefer to take over our country unopposed.”

I have had a TON of people asking how they can help...here is what would help us the most right now: SHARE SHARE SHARE SHARE SHARE! Tell us why you #standupforscience2025! Send flyers to your colleagues and labs! Change your bluesky banner! Tell your professional orgs and departments!

For profs who ask for evals partway through the semester as a student check-in, what kinds of questions do you ask? (both Likert scale & open-ended are welcome) As context, I’m teaching a 12 person grad students only multilevel modeling course (about 75% lecture and 25% working in R in class) Ty 🫶

BREAKING The Trump administration is maintaining a funding freeze at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in defiance of two federal court orders. The ongoing freeze was confirmed by an NIH official and internal correspondence reviewed by Popular Information.

For my fellow self-critical perfectionists, a reflection from therapy today: “If you’re being led in what you do by the negative self-talk in your head, you’re running a race with no a finish line. Nothing you can do will ever meet its standards, so don’t let it be your guiding light.” Woof.

On top of 5000 problems here: FEMALE AND WOMEN IS ON THE LIST BUT MALE AND MEN ARE NOT. JUST AN FYI.

The entire website for the NIH Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) is very nearly stripped bare. This is so, so devastating. orwh.od.nih.gov/research/fun...

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

Today is Retraction Day, when we observe the anniversary of the retraction (Feb. 2, 2010) of the fraudulent paper that purported to show a link between vaccines and autism. 🧪#medsky

Staff at CDC are being asked to scrub data on trans and non-binary folks from datasets. Public health ethics hold us to the highest ethical, professional, and scientific standards. Deleting data about Americans is unethical. OPM has ZERO authority over CDC practices. Obey the law. 🇺🇸🏛️⚖️

Gay? Lesbian? Trans? Intersex? NYC Health has health information for everybody. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

The entire archive of CDC datasets can be found here. HUGE shoutout to data archivists- this work is important 👏🙌🏻 archive.org/details/2025...

Are you funded by #NIH, #NSF or #CDC? Please post any letters or communications you’ve received from these agencies or HHS about restrictions on grant funding, publications etc. I want to catalog all of them for the record. #medsky #episky

This is a 5 alarm fire. They're going to pull down all publicly available data, studies, guidance, etc that involves LGBTQ people so when the worst happens to us, no one will know. They're actively trying to erase us. gizmodo.com/cdc-ordered-...

Wondering if any of my followers have any examples of focus group studies where researchers may have run separate focus groups with clinical providers who work with a given population and then those who are actual members of that population? Could be any diagnosis/population, any focus group topic.

Telling yourself you should call your Rep and Senators re: {{{the calamity}}}? Here's a helpful tool to get you going. Issues. Scripts. Phone #s customized to your ppl. I'm unvarnished at this sort of deed, but just done did it. 5calls.org

It's been interesting battling the guilt that I feel as I spend a lot of my time trying to make clear lectures / skill-building homework assignments for my MLM course. After years of doing only research, it's been quite the feat to overcome the "if it's not research, it's not productive" mindset.
