Zelensky not punching him right in the face is perhaps the greatest act of self-restraint I have ever witnessed.

22% of Americans speak a language other than English at home, 13% speak Spanish at home, according to the Census Bureau. Agencies will now (presumably) remove all non-English language support from informational websites. I honestly can't imagine a defense of this that isn't racist.

Are you a grad student or postdoc who would like to attend in-person #Evol2025? SSE offers registration waivers for those who need additional funding to attend the meeting. Complete the short application form by March 15: buff.ly/4gSSKk5 @evolmtg.bsky.social

I talked to NIH officials, current and former, about what's been happening inside the agency since the Trump administration shut down their grantmaking pipeline in January. Their stories showed just how willing our new leaders are to break the law: www.theatlantic.com/health/archi...

I have written a short statement responding to mass firings today of #NOAA / National Weather Service (#NWS) staff (which were concentrated among recent hires as well as highly experienced staff who had recently been promoted). Please see below screenshot & below for full text.

The plant, formally known as Ovicula biradiata, is especially notable for being the simultaneous discovery of a new species and genus. It was found with help from the community science app iNaturalist. By @jamesdoubek.bsky.social

What happens to floral scent when it is no longer needed? At the genetic level, are genes lost or down-regulated? Fun new open access paper in MBE! #evosky #PlantScience

Convergent floral scent loss following transition to hummingbird pollination in spiral gingers (Costus). I had so much fun on this project with @kathleenmkay.bsky.social and Santiago Ramirez and am thrilled to see it published now in @MolBioEvol! academic.oup.com/mbe/article/...

Such a disservice to the next generation of great scientists in this country.

Dear manager: 1. We ride with kings on mighty steeds across the devil's plain 2. We've walked with Jesus and his cross; he did not die in vain 3. We've run with wolves 4. We've climbed K2; even stopped a moving train 5. We've traveled through space and time, my friends, to rock this house again

And on the email, these words appear: 1) My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; 2) Look on my Week, ye Mighty, and despair! 3) Nothing beside remains. Round the decay 4) Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare 5) The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Two open positions for a lab manger and a laboratory technician. Applications from displaced federal employees are welcome. Lab manager position: www.ugajobsearch.com/postings/410... Lab tech position: www.ugajobsearch.com/postings/391... Please email [email protected] if you have questions

Dear manager: 1. I get up when I want 2. Except on Wednesdays 3. When I get rudely awakened by the dustmen 4. I put my trousers on, have a cup of tea 5. And I think about leaving the house Dept of Parks

Dear manager: 1. I walked through the valley of the shadow of death 2. I took a look at my life and realized there's nothing left 3. I've been blastin' and laughin' so long 4. Even my momma thinks that my mind is gone 5. Been spending most our lives living in a gangsta's paradise

The impact the NSF has in each state (at least until DOGE shuts it down). Let your representatives know how valuable NSF is, and why it mustn’t be destroyed. #NoKings

We had pouring rain yesterday so the moss has gone from crispy to lush. I went to visit the wood that's teeming with one of my favourite species, Hookeria lucens and it looked gorgeous. The leaves are a single cell thick & transparent. You can see each cell. #moss #botany #macrophotography #nature

NSF employees were unlawfully reclassified from career to probationary, and then fired. www.reuters.com/world/us/us-...

Just a reminder that the neither the U.S. Digital Service (which has been converted into DOGE) nor OPM has any legal authority to direct every single federal government employee to give them a job summary. Literally no such authority at all.

Here is the corresponding data for NSF with some key events marked...Remarkably consistent with the NIH data.

As many of you know, ~170 Program Officers at #NSF were fired on Tuesday, including a number that worked in Divisions important to the EEB community (e.g., DEB and GEO/OPP). 1/3

NIH indirects case update: Hearing ongoing now, and I'll try to live tweet some notable exchanges. Prior to more detailed arguments, Judge Kelley starts off with a few point questions to both sides: (I'm paraphrasing here)

This funding freeze is already having an immediate impact. It is hard to plan for salaries around grants that you have no definite timeline of hearing about. Its grad student recruitment, and uncertainty over grants means that many fewer solid offers are being made bsky.app/profile/eliz...

NEW: A program officer inside NIH sent an anonymous message to grantees with some updates and requests for patience. "This is the most stressful work situation most of us have ever been in," it reads. "I know this is tough, but please hang in there with us."

So I did this today: banged out a couple hundred words of a pitch while managing lab, sent it to the opinion page editor at the newspaper my parents still somehow get in print, and got back a "yes" in, I absolutely kid you not, under 15 minutes
