How to deal with one's anger has long puzzled psychology. Suppressing it doesn't work. Seeing the situation in a different light and accepting it does. Anger can also be productive, though. When it lets you remove obstacles and resist oppression. Just saying. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The whole “find a job you love and you won’t work a day in your life” rhetoric is some grade-a bullshit. Anything worth pursuing in life will be tedious and unpleasant some of the time. If you have the privilege to do work you enjoy a lot of the time, you’re doing fantastically well.

Fascinating discussion on the evidence behind the global reduction in birth rates - and the implications. Seems like Netflix is more to blame than I imagined! pca.st/episode/faf3...

Affairs are common. Twenty percent of married men have cheated. But do they make us happy? Why do we even have affairs in the first place? Listen to the latest episode of @crazyinlovepodcast.bsky.social: rss.com/podcasts/cra... Or watch here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GOu...

My latest for @psychologytoday.com: Affairs: The Grass Probably Isn’t Greener. Affairs generally don’t make us happier. Usually better to cultivate the relationship you do have. www.psychologytoday.com/gb/blog/get-...

New episode of @crazyinlovepodcast.bsky.social - on control. Some of our heroes like Gandhi & Einstein have been controlling. ❓ How do you identify controlling behaviour? ❓ What do you do if you're in a controlling relationship? 👂: rss.com/podcasts/cra... 👀 : youtu.be/1fNWerWhHgY

I've had multiple members of my family die from smoking-related cancer. It's an absolutely horrific thing to watch someone go through. Not only is using this as an analogy for social media harms misguided and detached from the science, I'm also starting to find it pretty offensive.

I appreciate I’m not the head of counterterrorism, but: no, it’s really not similar. @peteetchells.bsky.social @garwboy.bsky.social @tomchivers.bsky.social @stuartjritchie.bsky.social

A properly beautiful piece about Before Sunrise on its 30th anniversary. A film that, like its sequel, changes with you as you age. There's nothing else quite like it. www.independent.co.uk/arts-enterta...

Are you being controlled? Me and Matt Wotton for @psychologytoday.com. Control and abuse within relationships are far more common than you may think. Here are 5 ways you might be controlled without realising it. And what to do about it. www.psychologytoday.com/gb/blog/get-...

In the latest episode, we have a look at break ups: * Why “It’s not you; it’s me” is the wrong place to start. * How to plan and deliver the break-up news. * How to deal maturely with the immediate aftermath. Listen here: rss.com/podcasts/cra... Or watch here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_0V...

Brilliant to be part of the annual @norwichcityfsc.bsky.social mental health event at @canaries.co.uk on Thursday evening. Some fantastic local charities doing inspiring and deeply personal work. Also got a surprise chat with a childhood hero, getting a mini interview with Darren Eadie!

Latest podcast episode is up on the thorny issue of being the bad guy - but being the adult - when you decide to break up with your partner. Let us know what you think!

Such a good and entertaining distillation of the research into moderate drinking. Basically, it’s not brilliant for your health. But a) it’s not *that* bad; b) lots of the studies are rubbish; and c) all life involves risk. I won’t be giving up red wine anytime soon…

⚫️ Mystère Lynch. C'est la une de Libération ce week-end. Le plus grand cinéaste vivant est mort. 12 pages spéciales.

“He was not interested in answers because he understood that questions are the drive that makes us who we are.” Lovely. The world has lost a maverick.

1/2 V. disappointed to see this article making headlines yet again, with no mention of its deep methodological flaws and the vilification of its opponents. www.thetimes.com/uk/society/a...

Funny how I read this while taking a (short) break from reading @lucyfoulkes.bsky.social’s excellent book on adolescence…

Nothing, including fame, makes us immune to mental illness. Particularly liked the reminder that stress is the key factor in pushing our sensitivities to mental illness to more dangerous places.

What Smartphones are doing to kids' mental health is NOT terrifying (no matter what a child psychiatrist says) theneuroscienceofeve... My response to the Guardian's latest 'Phones are destroying the children!!' article. As ever, it's... problematic #Phones #screens #brains

A book so good I finished it and needed to sit in silence looking at a wall

My worry is there's a growing belief things like anxiety are immutable conditions not challenges we can overcome.

New blogpost is up on @psychologytoday.com How to end a relationship like a grown-up. www.psychologytoday.com/gb/blog/get-...

Fascinating discussion of Fight Club. I always learn something new and think about something in a new way listening to @helenlewis.bsky.social talk. pca.st/episode/64c2...

Dear Santa, You didn’t get me the thesaurus I asked for and now I’m mad. You made me really mad. I’m mad at you

Genuinely the most tense, gripping sporting contest I've seen all year. Great sportsmanship at the end too 👏🏾

No, smartphones are not 'rotting your brain' theneuroscienceofeve... Odd time to start it, but this subject's come up a lot today. My the first post on my new science blog. Will sort out the details later, but do subscribe if interested. There's a lot more coming...

Many states and countries are trying to enforce social media bans for youth. Does the evidence suggest these are likely to be successful? (spoiler: No). www.nature.com/articles/d41...

a short thread of Nicolas Cage resembling various philosophers 1. Spinoza

How quickly someone answers you is rarely a sign of how much they care about you. Delayed replies to emails, texts, and calls are often symptoms of being overwhelmed. Unless it's urgent, the true test of a relationship isn't the speed of response. It's the quality of attention.

Traditional date nights—candlelit dinners and deep conversations—often fall flat. For many couples, date night rituals are predictable, uninspired, and, frankly, boring. So, ditch the clichés and redefine how you spend time together. www.psychologytoday.com/gb/blog/get-...

New episode of Crazy in Love is up today. Contrary to a lot of advice out there, talking about your relationship doesn't always help. So, what should you do instead? When and how should you bite your tongue? Listen here: rss.com/podcasts/cra... Or watch it here: youtu.be/RE7um1a7wOs
