Do you have any specific thoughts/views about the impact of chilling speech and expression in arts, entertainment and culture?
comment in response to post
Even better would be if moderate Rs would also say it.

My broader point is that if you want people to help, you need to explain why you want us to do these things and why you think they will be effective. This seems random.

Sorry, this doesn’t make any sense to me. You think DJT will get these postcards? Is it only our county doing this or is it a nationwide coordinated effort? How will this track usage of USPS?
comment in response to post
What will this do?
comment in response to post
Why?
comment in response to post
It’s the uncertainty that is so destabilizing.

No. Bad take. The Democrats aren’t being effective.

I’m glad he is speaking out.
comment in response to post
I’ll vote D of course but I’m going to need to see more evidence that anyone in the Democratic Party can be effective before I put any volunteer time or money behind their efforts. They didn’t get NC behind Harris.

Defunded how? Please explain the details.

This style of public discourse of Mr. Grenell and others is a claim that they are the only ones who are allowed to do anything and the rest of us just need to take it. But it doesn’t work that way. We can all take action. And Hamilton decided to withdraw their show.
comment in response to post
Not surprising that he’s acting like he/the Kennedy Center are the victims and the Hamilton team took the first action. No, President Trump took the first action and this is a response.
comment in response to post
Mr. Grenell’s response is not surprising. Yes, the arts ARE for everyone, but I don’t believe that he thinks that.

They’re holding out to make a prequel.

Love it! 🙏

Can you set up one of your projectors like you have pointing at the Russian Embassy to project onto the Kennedy Center?
comment in response to post
Someone hire Michael Lewis to write a story about them, quick
comment in response to post
I think he said it pretty openly and people voted for him anyway.

Private funders should step in and make up for the U.S. funding so the show can go on.
comment in response to post
Or funders and audience shift to existing organizations and boost their capacity and reach. There are a ton of great organizations that are already there.
comment in response to post
When this happens I pretend I didn’t read the response until Monday morning.

Data from the National Endowment for the Arts is in this archive, right?

Not a lawyer, just a citizen: Does HB9 just openly mean that domestic violence at a person’s home with a gun would be legal??
comment in response to post
...until someone is given a grant, then has it taken away for "violating the rules" when the rules are illegal or improper in some way? Or is there a way to do it in advance, as it seems you are suggesting? Thanks for insight on how this would work. I'm not a lawyer, just an arts person!
comment in response to post
A process question: since these are project grants, not operating grants, won't it be hard to challenge them legally before they're granted? An organization is affected by no longer being eligible to apply; their funding isn't being taken away. Do you need to wait to take legal action...
comment in response to post
I realize I’m asking a total amateur question, but is that functionally possible? Could Congress go into recess and then the leadership could just not call it back and the Democrats can’t do anything about it?
comment in response to post
So is he withdrawing us from NATO with today’s statement?
comment in response to post
Do you think it’s clear that removing board members is permitted at the sole discretion of the President? Removal isn’t addressed in the statute. Of course they probably have other bylaws that aren’t public and a process could be outlined there.
comment in response to post
@countingcharity.bsky.social Can you comment on the governance issues related to the President’s assertion that he can remove Board members and appoint himself as Chair of the Kennedy Center? I’d be interested in your analysis.
comment in response to post
Even better: organize a mass audience walk out (like diplomats do at the UN). Audience walks out 5 minutes before the show begins, leaving behind signs on their seats saying “Culture Can’t Be Captured” (or something better!)
comment in response to post
Here’s the statute that describes how Kennedy Center Board members are appointed. uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?r...

An empty house would be a strong message and powerful visual.

DC audiences have choices. They should stop going and not renew their subscriptions for next season. Artists and producers have choices too. They should refuse to play or tour there.
comment in response to post
Will DC audiences stop attending in protest? I’d hate that for the artists performing but it would be a statement.

I’m repped by 2 R senators. I’m going to write to them and make the point that I am their constituent just as much as someone who voted for them so they should pay attention to my views. Don’t know if they care, but the point should be made.

No ads is the main draw by far for the podcasts I subscribe to.
