Exactly. I’m sure (I would hope) this isn’t the case, but sometimes I worry our admin would be craven enough to literally sell these human beings to El Salvador. Short of that, there’s no plausible way we can claim we can’t get them back. (Sorry for the dark comment, it’s where my thoughts went.)

This all feels so calculated and sinister.

But if your habeas petition is filed in Vermont when you are actually in Louisiana at that time, then Vermont won't have jurisdiction. Habeas jurisdiction is specific to the person, it "travels" with the person. Once you're able to get your petition filed in your exact location, jurisdiction is set.

Generally, a habeas petition has to be brought where the person is currently physically located. And let's say you're in custody in Vermont; if you're able to file your habeas petition while still located in Vermont, the Vermont court will retain jurisdiction no matter where else they bring you.

True. Wonky way to deal with it, but at least there's that. On first read, it appears to me that it still allows them to forum shop by funneling them to Louisiana or somewhere they like before a meaningful habeas petition could be filed.

Internet sleuths figured this one out yesterday - it's a subsidiary of Aptim, which makes some sense, though it shouldn't take this much work to figure it out www.aptim.com

I 💯 agree defeating fascism requires taking risks, I'm just not convinced this particular risk is the most effective one for me to take. I support those who choose to do it, but it's far from the only tool in our beat fascism box, IMO. Filling out this form is not the only option.

I guess my concern is that I'm putting myself on a shortlist for these DOGE people that I might not otherwise be on, merely because I exercised my 1st Amendment right. And they answer to a guy who doesn't care about those and likes retribution.

This form is great, but part of me sort of doesn't want to give them my all my contact information....but I guess they already have it.

I thought the brief was spot on. Take away the Sword of Damocles and move on since you can't practically make them go to trial. I also appreciated the cites reminding us that the separation of powers has to do with individual liberty and not catfights among branches.

They represent Boeing, one of America's largest defense contractors. What's next, go after Boeing for hiring PC and have SpaceX pick up the slack? Morons.

United we stand, divided we fall. The sooner we bring back civil discourse the better! It will require patience and understanding. If we can get opposing views on bsky, we can actually talk with them. I believe humans are remarkably capable of understanding other humans if they SEE them as human.

Exactly! I used to investigate cases for potential fraud at work and it takes months, sometimes years, to do it responsibly and thoroughly. No way you can root out fraud in two weeks - much less for several entire agencies.

Exactly. Plus transparency is much more efficient than a cover up.

I’d like to them to go ask experts in fascism what the most effective ways of beating it are, and then see them boldly and aggressively do that. DNC telling me democracy is in danger is woefully behind the times. We’re gonna run out of time if we don’t shut this down. Also you’re awesome :)

The Constitution is clear, and there is no shred of ambiguity about birthright citizenship. There are zero credible arguments otherwise. A whole lot has to happen to amend the Constitution, and none of it involves the President.

Ashamed to say it, but it took me a very long time to realize the difference between news and . . . biased opinion coverage. Bias in my direction makes me feel good, but objective news makes me feel better. In this climate, I feel I'm often forced to choose a bias.

No, but I did have a grand mal seizure (Wellbutrin lowers the seizure threshold). Likely due to other substances I was taking during that time. It never happened again (this was 20 years ago).
