Paul Merton, "One of the plans is to have Vance run for President. He wins, and he makes Trump his Vice President. Then Vance resigns. And Trump takes over" Ian Hislop, "Which is exactly the method used by Putin to stay in" "Not that I'm saying Trump copies, admires, and loves Putin"

And entirely self-inflicted!!! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

UK: Brexit is the biggest act of economic self harm any country will ever perform USA: Hold my beer...

I vacilate hourly between, "Thank god they're terrible at this" and "for all our sakes I wish they were better at this."

It looks as though Trump saw us shoot ourselves in the foot with Brexit and thought "We should do that, but with a much bigger gun and in both feet"

Senator Angus King: "I have to point out, Mr. Chairman, in the hour that we've been sitting here, investors in the United States stock market have lost two and a half trillion dollars."

The dismissal of Timothy Haugh came just hours after the US president sacked a number of senior National Security Council officials following claims of disloyalty by a far-right activist. www.ft.com/content/0e4d...

"Worried about privacy at the US border? A volunteer IT tutor advises travellers to wipe devices – or use a burner phone – to avoid scrutiny"

Also, it's got nothing to do with anything our government has done. It's a mathematical consequence of the mad formula they're using as we have a trade deficit. Other countries that sucked up (like Japan or Vietnam) got screwed by the formula.

It's got zero to do with negotiation or indeed with any sense of logic. The tariff rates are the product of minds which are functionally insane, doing fantasy mathematics at scale. We're all lost in a hall of mirrors pretending that a compass will help us find our way out.

Would seem extremely unwise to make a trade deal with a man who puts tariffs on an island inhabited only by penguins, no tariffs on Russia and ruinously high tariffs on some of the poorest countries in the world. Trump is a wildly mad and vindictive autocrat. Trying to please him is treacherous.

Chronic normality bias: he must have a cunning plan, it can’t be as stupid as it looks

Left: Jonathan Reynolds, "We can position the UK between the US and the EU, if you want to do business anywhere in the world you can come to the UK" Right: Ursula von der Leyen, "Europe has everything we need to make it through the storm, if you take on one of us, you take on all of us"

Tariffs were supposed to be better for the USA than any other major economy They have been worse for the USA than for any other major economy.

It’s 9am TFT time here, and citizens are already gathering to protest Tariffs by the United States. Our plain clothes Officer Penguins are attempting to maintain calm, but unfortunately we keep losing them in the crowd.

Happy Liberation Day to all who celebrate the release of money from your retirement accounts into thin air.

"I think it’s going very well. We’ve never seen anything like it. The markets are going to boom. The stock is going to boom. The country is going to boom." Donald Trump today, after his tariffs knocked $2.5 trillion off the value of the US stock market.

this is gob-smacking: www.ft.com/content/e025...

It’s as if he’s a Russian asset, trying to destroy America from within.

In a dystopian movie, JD Vance would be the toady loyalist who does whatever the leader wants, only to be shut out of the escape helicopter by the leader himself when the regime falls and beaten to death by the mob

Yes, Trump's tariffs will hurt US consumers in the short term, but, you should focus on the long term, where it will also hurt them.

Over $2 trillion has been erased from the stock market so far today.

Liberation Day has now liberated the US economy of $2 trillion. That's $5,882 for every man, woman and child in America.

The EU has a gigantic stick in its possible trade retaliation arsenal. But it's so big, they may never dare to use it. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

I see Trump has targeted the highest % tariffs on the biggest dangers Falkland Islands: 41% Laos: 48% Lesotho: 49% Saint Pierre and Miquelon: 50% Russia: No new tariffs

US stock market just closed. Carnage.

Dow drops 1,500 as US stocks lead worldwide sell-off after Trump’s tariffs ignite a COVID-like shock Who would have guessed apnews.com/article/stoc...

Hot tip: Everyone loses.

Redate this to today and it becomes a stunning moment of self-realization we will never actually experience in this space-time continuum

BREAKING: Israel has been bombing Syria again because Hamas tunnels, um, human shields, um, I've no idea what excuse we're using this time actually. Israel just really wanted to launch some bombs because that is what Israel does x

In my conversation with Chancellor Scholz this morning, we agreed to strengthen the diverse trade relationship between Canada and Germany.    As we face the crisis caused by President Trump’s tariffs, reliable trade partners are more important than ever.

He’s virtually psychotic.

Presidents shouldn’t have the power to pardon anyone. It’s all so corrupt.

$2.2trillion dollars were wiped off international stock markets today. Trump is making Liz Truss look like a fiscal genius.

We tried mass tariffs in 1828, and it crashed the economy. We tried again in 1930, and it crashed the economy. Third time’s the charm, I guess.

Ace businessman Donald Trump has knocked $1.5 trillion off the value of Wall St today. If you can't imagine losing $1.5 trillion, just imagine losing $1 every second for 31,709 years.

The markets when they realise the people running the US economy think an equation with two variables is a good methodology for starting a thirty-front global trade war through a half-trillion dollar tax increase:

In a "Fact Sheet" published alongside his tariffs, Donald Trump made clear that Britain would have to accept hormone-raddled beef and chlorine-washed chicken as part of a deal to remove his punitive tariffs. Starmer better not roll over and surrender! www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/...
