So many people are locked out financially from doing so. In our area the stipend is so small but the required hours make holding a separate job or arranging childcare impossible.

Nonviolent protests have not produced much results in modern history. Its honestly very one dimensional to say they would be bad leaders. You can only negotiate peacefully with a similar opponent who's committed to diplomacy. Its possible to love peace and be realistic.
