my latest: whether or not this is a constitutional crisis, there ought to be no question that our constitutional order is rotting from the inside out

For folks who've reached out asking how to help the 18F team, we've collected some ideas at 18f.org. We're so grateful for your support! (One more: Follow other #AltGov accounts for news and ideas on how to support public servants from the many other agencies affected. We're all in this together.)

New report shows that NIH grants fueled $95 billion in economic activity and 407,782 jobs in 2024. That's not to mention the countless lives that biomedical research has saved. Show me a better investment than that. www.forbes.com/sites/michae...

Clearly doing this in the name of efficiency. Any idea how long it will take to identify and change all these contracts? And for what? Virtue signalling? It’s disgusting.

Here's what we lose when teams like USDS and 18F are suddenly deleted. New from me: www.wired.com/story/doge-m...

There is a real, genuine 1st Amendment crisis in the United States right now. The government is openly retaliating against anyone with a viewpoint it doesn't like: Pro-Palestinian protesters, law schools teaching Black History, pro-immigration public service loan forgiveness seekers.

Who can I throw money at to fight this revoking-visas-of-protesters BS? ACLU? Who else?

Who’s working on DOGE related trackers? So far I'm aware of:

BREAKING: Federal judge issues a nationwide preliminary injunction against the medical provider funding prohibitions in Trump's EO seeking to restrict gender-affirming medical care for those under 19 and the "gender ideology" funding restriction in his Jan. 20 "sex"-defining EO.

What's it gonna take for everyone to realize the occupant of the white house is fundamentally anti-American?

Elon Musk, Apartheid, and America’s New Boycott Movement. An excellent piece by Clara Jeffery on how boycotts can work to combat evil and the lessons we can take from the 80s boycott of South Africa. (via @steveportigal.bsky.social) [motherjones.com]

JD Vance is skiing at a Vermont resort this weekend. The resort’s snow reporter took the opportunity to make some good trouble, sending out a message of resistance against an administration “threatening our democracy, our livelihoods, our land”. [kottke.org]

Hot take: They want this shutdown and will use it to further their chaos. Memos show that they want the final size of the public service to be “essential” workers only — ie the only people who would be allowed to work by law during a shutdown. They want this and will use it to make deeper cuts.

This is the way.

Groups tied to Elon Musk have already spent more than $4.2 million on the Wisconsin Supreme Court race—a clear sign that his plans for oligarchy extend well beyond Washington.

thread - 18F had effects far beyond the federal government

18F, the federal government’s technology shop, was just demolished by Musk’s team. It was a cost-recoverable org, charging agencies for their expertise, using a consulting model. Its cost to government was negligible, its benefits huge. My team there once saved DoD $500 million. A thread about 18F:

Tried to gather some thoughts about the “deletion” of 18F. Bottom line: None of this is about efficiency. We’ve known it for weeks and it’s plain as day. They’re simply removing any barrier to privatization, oligopoly, and plutocracy. hillary.medium.com/deleting-18f...

Stories from federal workers about their positive experiences working with 18F www.reddit.com/r/fednews/co...

If you worked for 18F and got fired, Group together to start a consulting company. It’s just a matter of time before DOGE needs you to fix the mess they inevitably create. They will have to hire your company as a contractor to fix it. But on your terms. I’m happy to invest and/or help

🚨 Your House representative is now back home through February 23. That’s where we come in. With Trump and Elon Musk pulling off a billionaire coup in real time, this congressional recess is about turning up the heat like never before. Let’s get to work: indivisi.org/muskorus

Unreal. The US government is dumping Asian and African families and children in random countries that they have no connection to. Dumping, not "deporting." Deportation implies the return of a person to their home country. This is treating people like toxic waste. www.cbsnews.com/news/us-depo...

The new DOGE EO continues to vest the claimed authority over all this in the USDS Administrator, which is still vacant and is still not an office held by Musk. A very simple question should be pressed by both the media and members of Congress: who is currently acting as the USDS Administrator?

The digital infrastructure of the United States Government is both critical and fragile. Many of us who work in digital government have been trying to figure out what’s going on as norms and protocols are being subverted — Thread on some of what we know so far:

I want to spell out the basic reason it’s so dangerous for Elon to have control of the U.S. payments system. It may seem like a technical matter, but the dynamics are simple. 1/x

“Let’s be crystal clear about what’s happening: A private citizen with zero Constitutional authority is effectively seizing control of critical government functions.” www.techdirt.com/2025/01/31/e...

Some news, as they say. I’m leaving USDR next month, but will continue cheering them (and all of #civictech) on while I take a much needed break. Grateful to have led this incredible team during an impactful time! www.usdigitalresponse.org/resources/le...
