Homer Simpson into the bushes, Alligator Gar edition:

don’t talk to me or my son ever again* *also, I might eat my son.

Time for #breakfast? The barramundi is a large, silver fish that changes sex as it grows. Once the fish reaches about 20 inches in length, it transitions from male to female.

I finally finished my Spotted Gar illustration for today's #SundayFishSketch 🐡

Somewhere in the U.S., there’s a scientist staring at their NSF/NIH grant application wondering why they bother. This post is for you. Science and society both need you. Hang in there and know there is a whole community supporting you.

silliness is a fuck you to the void

Did you guys know you can keep…get this…little boxes of water with fish in them…in your house??

for this #sturgeonsaturday here is a release video! 🧪🌎🐠🌐👩🏻‍🔬 For my research we get into the water with the sturgeon to ensure the least amount of stress We turn them on their back (as shown here) as sturgeon get calm & sleepy when on their backs After we take samples the fish is safely released 🫶🏼👇🏼

It's Friday. The weekend is upon us. Whatever you do, wherever you go, please remember to: 🗃️🧪

Great insights into #naturalhistory and #ichthyology from Dr. Mark Sabaj (a wonderful writer) ‘Restoring a Local Boy’s Legacy, One Fish at a Time’ www.anspblog.org/restoring-fo...

Take a breather with appropriately-named (and comical) Forward-facing Gar:

WHAT are you two talking about? Alright then. Keep your secrets.

exactly, they're so much better

Sacramento sucker.

ENJOY a relaxing swim with some local leeches! Yes, LEECHES🪱🪱🪱 #Leechnado These leeches were observed in a roadside stream entering Green Bay, Wisconsin, during Northern Pike fieldwork. These are predatory leeches, not parasitic blood-sucking leeches. They feed on other small invertebrates!

Speciation in gars: Longnose Gars told the most lies. Shortnose Gars were more honest.

BABY Alligator Gar! At less than one inch long and two weeks old, these future river monsters already breathe air. Watch as one takes a little gulp (and tiny bubble burp)! Yes, these are the same fish that can grow over 8 feet long and over 300 pounds!

group photoGARphs go about as well as you’d expect 😅 *testing out a new 📷 for @garlab.bsky.social

Big win! The Fish & Wildlife Service will expand Okefenokee Refuge by up to 22,000 acres, protecting it from a proposed titanium mine. Nearly 30,000 public comments showed how special Okefenokee is to people everywhere. Thank you to everyone who spoke up!

#sturgeonsaturday Lake sturgeon are a gregarious fish, meaning they like to hang out in groups. Sturgeon that are exposed to a stressor, like heat, in isolation were more stressed than fish that were exposed together, a phenomenon called social buffering. 🐡🐠🧪🌐🔥 Study below: tinyurl.com/4bd9kcc2

Cheers & Happy New Year!

Happy #sturgeonsaturday. Please celebrate responsibly.

yall already know what day it is, #sturgeonsaturday! 🧪🌎👩🏻‍🔬🌐 sturgeon are living fossils ~ their genomes have remained relatively unchanged since 🦕 time this means sturgeon are essentially in an evolutionary standstill compared to other fish ~ looking into their eyes is like meeting an ancestor 🥹

A lake sturgeon cuddle puddle for this #sturgeonsaturday Developing sturgeon will gather together after they hatch and hide in surrounding rocky substrate, in tanks we provided substrate as bioballs so they don’t get crushed!! 🐡🐠🌐🧪🌎

I'd boop it!

That’s quite possible 😂 #GarWeek

GARS OF THE WORLD! We present to you the 7 species of living gars! Each GARphic features an illustration of an adult and juvenile fish, along with a headshot photo. We hope you’ve enjoyed learning about these awesome living fossil fishes during #GarWeek!

The last of my #GARtworks (at least, of the finished ones), which makes me think I need to draw more gars... #GarWeek

I caught my 1st gar, a shortnose gar, in 2001 while fishing near in Kansas. I couldn't figure out why other anglers didn't respect this fish. Now there's such a great community of researchers, anglers & conservationists advocating for gar. Follow #GarWeek to learn more. #25DaysofFishmas

#sturgeonsaturday - there is a TON of phenotypic variation in Fraser River sturgeon, especially in their snout length and body color! 🧪🌎👇🏼

It is very interesting how much White Sturgeon can vary in snout length. The pictures are White Sturgeon I caught back in August in the Fraser river, and are roughly the same size, look how different the length of their snouts is! #sturgeonsaturday
