I truly think people don’t realize how many universities and colleges — especially public ones — may shut down if restrictions on and withholding of federal funding persists for even one presidency We are facing the demolition of American higher education

⚒️🧪 Today's Icelandic Met Office update says that the likelihood of another eruption increases as more time passes, since magma is still accumulating below. There's also a neat detailed map of the eruption start points and fissures from all 7 Sundhnúksgígar eruptions so far. vedur.is/um-vi/fretti...

ESRI is updating their basemaps automatically to incorporate The Gulf of America starting tomorrow 2/20. Unrelatedly, here's a workflow that you can use to manually edit your vector basemap labels: www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/...

Professors please pull up a chair. I’ve been talking to my classes about what has been going on. I explained indirect costs to them. I talked to them about what a probationary employee is in the government. At the end of class they asked if we could talk about it more. (1/)

A teacher emailed me & said "My scientist didn't reply to me. My scientists ALWAYS reply to me! What the heck!". I was like "Well. Science is kinda crumbling. Friends/colleagues are losing their jobs or at least funding, & some are being told to cease all outside communications". She hadn't heard.

Today’s M4.3 #earthquake in western Texas was located about 30 km West of the M4.9 a few days earlier. The increase in seismicity in this general area has been attributed to wastewater reinjection by the oil and gas industry. 🧪⚒️

This recent paper on tomography of submarine Kolumbo volcano, near #Santorini, describes the detection of “a body of mobile magma”, but unfortunately uses a complicated coordinate system that makes it difficult to relate to current seismicity. ⚒️🧪🌋 agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

M6.0 just now in Ethiopia, highest magnitude #earthquake in the swarm up until this point in time. The moment tensor only shows 12% double couple, which commonly means that the earthquake is not caused by rupture on a single flat fault plane (or it could just be poorly determined). 🌋🧪⚒️

Mao et al (today's Science) develop "seismic hydrographs" using existing seismic networks around Los Angeles to track groundwater storage, finding ~25% of storage depleted since 2006 was replenished by large 2023 atmospheric rivers (ARs). Very very relatedly, ... ½ www.science.org/doi/abs/10.1...

First time out of the house in a few days, after feeling crappy for most of the week. Managed a short walk to this beautiful waterfall, starting to feel like spring is on its way!

One of our supporters shared this with us—people are getting creative tonight!

An update to the updated map! A M3.7 #earthquake has now been added in basically the same spot on/near the Hayward fault. ⚒️🧪

An updated map of the recent M3.5ish earthquakes in the greater San Francisco area, now including two events today on/near the Hayward fault. 🧪⚒️

-Seismic Activity and Public Reactions in the Santorini-Amorgos Region (via LastQuake) Dynamic map of seismic activity and public response in the Santorini-Amorgos region from 27 January. Showing LastQuake app sessions in white, felt reports from light blue to red, and earthquakes in pink.

This is a comprehensive (and very bleak) summary of the current state of US science

For those who want to stop doomscrolling and just stare at some lava for a little while: Episode 9 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began this morning with lava fountaining 🧪⚒️🌋 www.youtube.com/live/oG5zz9S...

USGS “moment tensor” inversions both give 4.6 magnitude, strike slip faulting and depth of 11-20 km for this #earthquake near Starigrad Croatia. ⚒️

The little #earthquake sequence of the last few days near San Bernardino is located on or near a section of the San Andreas Fault system that has been fairly quiet in the last few decades. Mechanisms show normal/strike slip faulting. 🧪⚒️

“We have evidence that this is fluid-driven, swarm-type seismicity that comes in pulses. This is not unheard of in other volcanic regions; however, this time it is evolving on top of active faults that complicate the expression of seismicity.” 🧪⚒️

A little cluster of earthquakes in the last two days near or on the San Andreas Fault near San Bernardino. This sequence includes two M3.6 #earthquakes. Mechanisms appear to be a mix of normal and strike slip faulting. earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/... 🧪⚒️

Hi @agu.org it’s only been a few days since you very specifically asked for your members’ input on how to respond to the administrations cuts to research funding and assault on DEI. Well, I’ve been a member for at least 15 years and I say you need to foster diversity. Put it back.

Hi Seismo-Bluesky! I decided to test a pipeline with SeisBench, PyOcto, NonLinLoc, and HypoDD on the Santorini sequence. The level of activity (>4,500 events) is truly stunning! There are repeated bursts migrating backwards and forwards, spreading outwards from a narrow, almost linear channel.

Happy #Lawyercat Anniversary for all who celebrate! It's been four years since the kitten appeared in my Zoom courtroom, and I released the 48 second video that made the whole world laugh. Here is the full video showing the big reveal at the end (in two parts because Blue sky). Enjoy!

Having funded teams/contracts that required six figure+ funds a few times now, these numbers SOUND really huge in isolation to normal folks but they're not! Don't make floating numbers! I like to say things like this: "A cancer lab is basically a small business, with many jobs created by each grant"

I made a quick map of historical seismicity for the region of today’s M7.6 #earthquake near the Cayman Islands. This left lateral strike slip event occurred on a fault system that produced a few similar events in size & mechanism in the last decade. (Good to see that USGS NEIC is still online!)🧪⚒️

High-precision relocation of earthquake activity offshore Santorini, Greece (2024-01-01 to today).

I've already seen a couple of "how could they make a stupid mistake like this, don't they know this will destroy research and higher ed?" It's not a mistake or an unintended consequence of a different goal. The aim is to destroy research and higher ed.

What @samlmontano.bsky.social says about undermining decades of progress is true literally of everything that matters. Certainly everything my colleagues I have spent our lives working on - climate, Nature, social justice & cohesion, stability, development, happiness, poverty, literacy, health… 🤯

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%. I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

If you are on a college campus, please review what is allowed and how to protect your students. Remember, most ICE raids do not have warrants. They aren't allowed in classrooms, labs, offices, and other non-public spaces. And if you know the student they are asking about? NO YOU FUCKING DON'T.

Here is my very first post here, courtesy of bsky.app/profile/did:... I remember not being convinced Bluesky was going to work out, after my experiences on Post and other platforms, but now it has taken the place of the old Twitter for me, including as a news source.

This is effectively what led to the 1900 Galveston Hurricane being the most deadly storm in U.S. history. We are so back, i guess. 😩

What is, say, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center supposed to do with this?

"Interior Secretary Doug Burgum signed an executive order late Monday directing his deputies to submit a plan to him within 15 days for opening federal lands to more mining, including national monuments currently off limits to miners." news.bloomberglaw.com/environment-...

Animation of earthquakes NE of Santorini by GFZ, showing migration towards the NE. The original post also mentions a current preference for an explanation of this activity as having a magmatic origin. 🧪⚒️
