Are we stuck in a Black Mirror episode?

The US government is either incompetent, evil, or both. They seem to have chosen to come across as incompetent for now.

I find it’s important to occasionally pull away and try to do something I enjoy.

Sorry, we need to look after ourselves currently. Someone is trying to destroy our economy.

His sentence starts “we are going to replace armies of millions of people…”. He was talking at the same time as the interviewer, so I think people are missing the first part.

While I think this dude is abhorrent, it’s worth saying that I think most people are misunderstanding what he said. The way I heard it, he’s saying that those “millions of people” will be replaced by a smaller number of skilled American tradespeople

That’s not to say that I think he’s dishonest in his respect for the victim here. I just don’t think it’s practical to expect him to focus on every victim

Performative implies the person performing the action doesn’t have conviction and is essentially putting on an act. I’m not sure what trending topics have to do with the motivations of the people at the marches.

We have hundreds of homicides every year. I can’t say for sure that Carney won’t recognize every victim, but I think it’s unlikely. I suspect it will be similar to most politicians. He’ll acknowledge when there are trends, or when a crime is attention-grabbing and/or close to home.

Plus it put pressure on our stores to start looking for alternative suppliers instead of just waiting to see what Trump would do.

It’s a small thing that normal people can do. Travel from Canada to the US is also significantly down. Both of these will have some financial impact. Canadians aren’t going to forget any time soon. We’ve been threatened by an ally that we considered close. It’s a betrayal.

For many of us, it wasn’t about the tariffs. It was about the threat to our sovereignty.

Nepean is also the riding that he’s running in, so it’s likely more about that.

I mean, I knew this would happen. I’m not even an economist.

People seem to be glossing over this issue. The Trump admin is at least partially using tariffs to pressure other countries to reduce their regulations and put their own people at risk. Not just with food, but with environment, banking regulations, etc.

I suspect the same.

I think he made a mistake coming after Canada first, while we have an economist at the helm. Canada took a strong approach and other countries may follow our lead.

It’s our liberal party. Mark Carney is the party leader, an economist who has experience getting out of crises. He seems to be the perfect PM to stand up and protect our country against Trump.

I just worry how far his sycophants are willing to go to satisfy his whims. Like, would they be willing to actually attack Greenland?

I wouldn’t be surprised if he just keeps doing this yo-yo tariff nonsense his entire term. Threaten oversized tariff. Get no response. Lower threat. Get offended. Threaten oversized tariff.

It’s a fine line because tariffs applied by our government hurt Canadians. Their aim is to have the most impact on red states, while minimizing impact to Canadians.

Everyone I follow on here is talking about it. Not sure what you’re seeing.
comment in response to

Absolutely. Canada had a chance to see the US failing under Trump, and put someone in who would protect us from the same fate. Hopefully we make the right call.

It was also absurd to believe he would make us a state. More likely a territory.
comment in response to

I have no real idea what is going through his skull for sure, but I suspect the tariffs are more about attempting to destroy Canada and take our resources.
comment in response to

Absolutely. Canadians are mad as hell. From the threat on our sovereignty and yo-yo tariffs, it’s only growing. Many empathetic Americans are with us. I think he thought this would weaken us.
