me too. Immigration Agent wanted to know why I was going to Anthropology conference if I wasn't working in an Anthropology department. I nearly shat myself for a second. This was under Obama btw.

always feel a bit sad when I come back. people have nothing to look forward to and so treat others like NPCs.

UK needs a stern talking to.

And there's the rub. He was religious. But the official church is coopted by the state.

Have we tried turning it off and on again. I'd like a different multiverse.

I actually talked to a pilot who bombed a theatre in Ukraine. It's part of my job. Yes, that theatre. He was very upset but said he had no choice. As long as people are prepared to obey their superiors who order them to do evil things nothin will change. This is not a new phenomenon.

Sure, it is imperative that smart Europeans assess the gaps from US withdrawal, but it's not as if they're not doing this or haven't had time. Trump's antics are not really the shock people are painting them as.

This is the problem (not with your analysis) with what's getting airtime - no one can say what would happen in 5 years, apart from the fact that the Poles would almost certainly be so armed to the teeth that even a regrouped Russian assault would make Kyiv 2022 look like a cake walk. Ditto Nordics.

Majority of munitions used by Ukr are either domestic, S. Asian or EE, if I'm not mistaken. They now outproduce everyone on the planet in domestic drone production, don't they. Of course that requires cold hard cash, but that's small change for the EU.

Ian, you didn't address anywhere the complete depletion of Ru assault capacities v. what would in any case DEFINITELY involve Polish army and probably Finns, Swedes at v. least. I'm looking for sober analysis. Of course, no one should belittle Baltic legit security needs/fears.

Ukrainian resistance will not end, but of course for it to continue it requires Europe to support. Having said that, US support has been significantly exaggerated by Americans themselves for at least a year.

Agree, but ok, but how are they more of a weak point now than before? Given massively depleted assaults capacity of Ru - even in five years time, after their economy implodes. What I've heard so far is infantile arguments.

I agree. But 90% seems to be hysterics detached from reality. Like, I've supervised students who are now defence establishment. None of them say that Baltics could be realistic target of Ru.
comment in response to post
How would they take Odesa? Realistically? With what current forces (or even forces in 3-4 years) would they attack Baltics, given that all Scandinavian countries would defend Baltics irrespective of NATO? (of course this is not directed at you, but the 'experts', who can of course never answer it)

Im sure for obvious holidaymakers it's still totally fine but there are a lot of other purposes.

how bad do you think it will get before GOP pushback?

but it's clearly not meant to protect citizens. Where's the evidence of that? It's also not unreasonable to extrapolate from the numerous cases in the OP. There's almost no chance this would happen to a US traveler to Europe. Your argument doesn't stand up.

Of course it's more likely in this case that the official is either a frustrated authoritarian personality and feels emboldened or that the immigration officials want to 'work towards' the führer (see Kershaw). In either case that's how fascism works.

preferably skipping the bit where the tri-state area is a smoking ruin and subject to mass rape by the liberators.

Russian elite are still in the deluded uplands of maximalism. Bringing them down to the valley of the real will take time and effort.
