This is out today!

well, this is awkward. A few of my US colleagues were upset yesterday after I posted that it was inadvisable to travel to US for conferences.

No more Slavic conference for me in the US then. To make it worthwhile because employers/inviter will not cover full travel costs, I subsidise my legitimate research travel to US in particular with 'honoraria' = speakers fees. As in the classic song: 'gudbai, Amerika, O!'

What is extra fun is when you google you get diametrically opposed advice. However, ESTA allows 'business trips'. Small print literally answers q: "Can I recieve compensation from a US entity?" with "Maybe."

Putin and Erdoğan sitting on the second row and right now in the exam Erdoğan is asking for Putin's crib notes. Meanwhile at the back Trump throws spitballs to get Putin's attention. The invigilator is snoring oblivious at the front.

Over-egged but as OP says later, we will never see 1995 again.

The answer of course,is no. Law of rhetorical headlines, etc.

Putin: you want us to stop hitting energy infrastructure? Trump: Yes Putin: Schools and hospitals are still ok though right? Just energy? Trump: Yes Putin: OK Trump: Peace in our time.

Very excited to dig into @jeremymorris.bsky.social latest!

I missed the launch of this. Really looking forward to reading it!

Why would anyone willingly go to the USA now? I've experienced enhanced security at the border because the official didn't understand what an academic conference was. Lord know how easily a trip could turn out badly now.

" it looks very much like people will be left gravely disappointed and resentful whatever the outcome of the negotiations. Furthermore, it is revealing to hear from Muscovites the old chestnut that Russians are a stoic nation while people in the capital have lived a life wrapped in cotton wool..."

Musk seems depressed, lonely, friendless, hated by several children, frequently drugged up and angry. Oh, and found out to be a complete intellectual fraud. What a ghastly bloke. But no more so than many academic managers we have all worked for.
