On this date in 1883, French painter Edouard Manet succumbed to complications from syphilis, having already suffered the amputation of a gangrenous foot. His last words were spoken to his surgeon, who said he had seen and admired his painting of water lilies. "Just kill me, asshole," Manet replied.
