For those of us who have practiced and worked from the time of Medicare becoming law until now, the ACA has not only saved lives but has moved us toward the ultimate goal of universal coverage. A great article. @aafp.bsky.social www.healthaffairs.org/content/fore...

One of the worst "messages" from prevention I have seen: don't do anything, just sit there and wait for proof and until then, tick boxes. @familymedicinefam.bsky.social jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

The US Preventive Services Task Force gives an "insufficient" recommendation to screening for food insecurity. Huh?? For primary care practices to be successful in communities and partner with appropriate agencies, they have to find ways to address insecurity locally. @aafp.bsky.social

#Caregiving is one of the most universal human experiences, yet stigma and barriers exist within the US workforce for family #caregivers. Our recent report offers recommendations to support and protect family caregivers in STEMM. Learn more: buff.ly/gz4YhNk

This always was and should still be a part of primary care practices. Piecework and “efficiency” push against it but community centered patient care (housecalls) works best in a practice that is comprehensive and continuous. @aafp.bsky.social

Pharmacists in general practice are popular with patients and with GP employers – but their recruitment from a struggling community pharmacy sector has left its mark. #PharmSky #MedSky #GPSky

Federally Qualified Community Health centers receive increased reimbursement from Medicaid to balance the care they provide for uninsured patients in needy urban and rural communities. Threatening that will eliminate care, force some FQHCs to close or reduce care and close more rural hospitals.

Collective action for better care for patients and communities and better working conditions for clinicians has a long history in the US. We did in 1970 in Chicago at Cook County. I suspect specialty docs feel the same way in many cases. Join together!! @aafp.bsky.social

Any system that invests in primary care, encourages long term relationships with a personal physician will have more positive results for patients and costs. @aafp.bsky.social

I am looking for examples of urbanism and design of smaller communities that focus on walkable or public transportation to meet personal and family needs that include medical care - primary medical care - in small offices in neighborhoods. Would love to read about them and find out how they function

Nice article. Learning how to talk about uncomfortable issues requires trust and eye contact, not ticking boxes and looking at computers. Bring back the human to the clinical interaction. @aafp.bsky.social

time to take these data to local newspapers across America - talk with health reporters - they are the folks we need to reach. And have a local doc be interviewed and quoted. Public is getting their "data" from somewhere - we need to counter it.

One last thing I’ll say about this is that judging by people’s messages, the audio version has some stuff not in the edited online transcript, including a discussion of the false tension around empathy in journalism, and a bit about paying attention to sparrows.
