Armed government agents went to the home of a lawful resident of the United States without a warrant and arrested him over the content of his speech. This is a five-alarm fire for civil liberties.

The United States government just disappeared a lawful US resident because it didn't like his speech. You should care about this because it shouldn't happen to anyone, but you should also care because it could happen to you. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/09/n...

re the previous repost: if they can disappear permanent residents they can disappear citizens

For all you "Not Yet A Constitutional Crisis" people: The kid at Columbia with a green card currently in secret ICE detention for thoughtcrime is a four alarm fire.

This is going to get so much worse. This is what “mass deportation” looks like. It’s really ugly.

We will never know— we will never have the faintest idea— how much money is getting made in insider trading windfalls from people in Trump's and Musk's circles who have an hour of notice about the daily swings in tariff policy or the occasional announced *expectations* of such swings.

This is truly devastating, one of hundreds of thousands of cuts that will lead directly to immense suffering and death of innocent people.

If humans outsource peer review to computers, then the computers are the peers, and peer review no longer has any meaning. It's the end of academia as a human enterprise, and the beginning of research as prompt engineering. Here be dragons.

I'm not sure people understand what's happening. Israel stopped all aid trucks from entering Gaza until Hamas agrees to sign a rewrite of the original ceasefire agreement, which will allow Israel to continue the war indefinitely...and the whole world is quiet about it www.cnn.com/2025/03/03/m...

Starting in a moment, the House Oversight Committee will be holding a hearing with mayors of several cities which have policies limiting the use of local law enforcement resources to help ICE. I'll be live-tweeting the hearing at this thread. Follow along here! oversight.house.gov/hearing/a-he...

DOGE is gutting the federal agency that leads climate research and oversees the weather service, laying off 10% of staff (with the ultimate goal of eliminating 50%) and cancelling office leases, @justcalma.bsky.social scoops www.theverge.com/news/622990/...

Presumably an effort to destroy then privatize all of these services - under Elon I'm sure - monetizing and forcing people to pay for access to the information that should be a public good.

A LOT of people talking about their First Amendment rights being violated on college campuses previously. Let's see if they come out to defend what the First Amendment actually means.

This has kind of gotten buried in the news cycle for obvious reason, but the Presidential Management Fellows program has been shut down. It's another example of how this Admin is canceling out the next generation of leaders.

All jokes aside, I don't think folks up north realize just how disastrous this will be for the Gulf South

NEW — The National Treasury Employees Union Chapter 282 just emailed its ~8,000 employee members strongly advising them NOT to reply to the “What did you do last week?” email from OPM/Musk.

A new Executive Order is reported to target the Inter-American Foundation, which invests in development across LAC, because it is considered 'a vehicle to justify Democratic theories about the root causes of migration.' 'Root causes' was expected to be a possible motivation for development funding.

NEW: A regional FEMA chief of staff took Elon Musk's Fork in the Road offer. He has proof of receipt. But they didn't honor it. Instead, they fired him 13 days later. Now, this retired Navy captain is speaking out. www.thebulwark.com/p/musk-doge-...

This is a concentration camp. They are describing a concentration camp.

Just under a third of Project 2025’s policies have already been implemented, according to a developer who is tracking them. More than half of its goals for DOJ, the State Department, and the White House are now in progress. Great Q&A from @jeva.bsky.social: heatmap.news/politics/pro...

True story: a few years ago, I was being interviewed by a reporter for the New York Times. I mentioned the history of eviction statutes and how they tied into Jim Crow. The reporter asked "what's Jim Crow?" When I explained, the reporter didn't believe me and said the US wouldn't do that.

Refugee Fellow Jomana Abunahla was displaced to Rafah after October 2023. In February 2024, she collected the stories of six other displaced Palestinian women in Rafah. Their powerful testimonies tell the story of Gaza, its displaced, — and those who survived.

They arrived at the United States border from around the world, hoping to seek asylum. Instead, they were detained, shackled and flown by the U.S. military to a faraway country, Panama. Our exclusive look at a new front in Pres. Trump’s immigration crackdown:

1/5. 📣The Thirty-sixth Standing Committee on Finance Meeting (#SCF36) will take place next week in Bonn, Germany from the 18-19th of February. Here is a very brief look at the key issues on the agenda that relate to #LossAdnDamage. 🧵

The agency that tells you if there’s a hurricane coming btw

“I don't feel that it was right that they brought us a plane like that.” A fourth military deportation flight flew out from El Paso on Thursday. On board were 80 Guatemalans. These flights are part of a campaign to dehumanize migrants. My story for The El Paso Times, a friend in Guate helped

Refugees International is deeply alarmed by President Trump’s call to “clean out” Gaza. We urge the U.S. gov't and int’l partners to stand firmly against this dangerous narrative of ethnic cleansing — and to uphold policies that respect Palestinian rights & dignity. More in our full statement.

Refugees who we already committed to protect in the U.S. have had their flights canceled, according to a memo from the State Department. Many of these refugees, including children, were waiting to be reunited with their families. There is no justification for this. www.cnn.com/2025/01/22/p...

My Comment on President Trump’s Dismantling of US Climate Action 🧵 “President Trump’s decision to roll back US climate action is a devastating blow, not only for the country but for the entire planet." #InaugurationDay #ClimateEmergency 1/4

The White House released the National Resilience Strategy: www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-roo..., building on the earlier resilience framework. Download it and use it to help inform state and local climate resilience efforts. 🔌💡

STATEMENT: President Trump’s dangerous set of day-one executive orders seek to remake U.S. immigration and refugee policy by closing off virtually all legal pathways for people to seek refuge in the United States. Read more in our full statement.

Maybe its a good time for a little Executive Order (EO) primer, a few wee tools for sorting wheat from chaff so it seems like less of a deluge. Item 1. EOs have to comply with the Constitution & laws, including acts of Congress. Any that don't will face long court battles before anything changes. /1

Yet another dangerous aspect of life in The Petrocene (@johnvaillant.bsky.social's excellent term) aka Petropyrocene (my term combining John's term and @sjpyne.bsky.social's Pyrocene). Not just climate change from our fossil fuel use but also how many everyday items are made of petroleum products.

Shoutout to Kathryn McConnell and @koslov.bsky.social for putting together a very useful primer on managed retreat as a response to wildfire risk, a topic that deserves much more serious thought and attention than it's getting at the moment

More than 100 years after its initial review that blamed Black men, the Dept. of Justice just released its report on the 1921 Tulsa race massacre The report says the attack “was so systematic and coordinated that it transcended mere mob violence”

Don't donate STUFF! Send cash! (Worked on CA #disasters for years.) Donated clothes and food are hard to manage. "Items that are used are very hard to distribute, and more often than not, are warehoused or trashed rather than delivered where they might be needed." laist.com/news/climate...

Today, we applaud the U.S. government's genocide determination in Sudan and sanctions against RSF leaders and entities in the UAE. This momentum must continue into the Trump administration —and include accountability for complicit countries like the UAE. #SpeakOutOnSudan
