misty river Thames this morning

A cartoon for #worldbookday (coming on Thursday 6th) for this week’s @theguardian.com books.

Bright beginning.

EXCLUSIVE: Sen. Adam Schiff joins MeidasTouch to respond to Trump's Oval Office Meltdown over Zelenskyy

Schiff: This is not who we are. We don’t bully an ally. We don’t take the side of a dictator. We’re just not what we saw displayed by the President of the United States today. I would say to our allies around the world that what they witnessed today might be Donald Trump, but it is not America.

can’t beat a cold sunny spring day with the blossom starting to come out

Trump cannot be given a state visit to the UK. It should never have been offered. The invitation must now be withdrawn. You might as well hand it to Putin.

Perhaps we can stop being so parochial about Starmer's trip to Washington now. It was a failure. We are in a battle against fascism. And every decision we make is judged by whether it assisted or opposed it.

Apropos

The scenes in the Oval Office make the world, not just Ukraine, a less safe place tonight. We must all speak up for cooler and wiser heads to prevail if we want peace.

Clown.

Withdraw the state visit invitation to Trump. Offer one to Zelensky instead. With bells and fucking whistles.

Dear Volodymyr Zelenskyy, dear Ukrainian friends, you are not alone.

This weekend's @theipaper.com cartoon #Trump #KeirStarmer

Word of the day is ‘huff-snuff’ (16th century): a hectoring bully or braggart.

Will never forget the fawning treatment certain journalists in Westminster gave this guy when he was merely privately WhatsApping his vile opinions, rather than publishing them openly for everyone else to see

Terrific resignation letter by Anneliese Dodds, this.

The cost of reaching net zero in the UK by 2050 is now predicted to be just 0.2% of GDP (about £4 billion per year). Spread this far and wide. It reveals Reform and the Conservatives' opposition to net zero for being 'too expensive' as just plain wrong.

NEW: David Miliband joins the growing backlash to Keir Starmer's decision to cut the aid budget to boost defence spending. He says: "The global consequences of this decision will be far reaching and devastating for people who need more help not less."

You take 2 minutes out to check the BBC Good Food site to see how long you should give a couple of chicken pieces in an air fryer - and you get this below the line 😆

Don’t ever let Starmer defend this Aid cut as ‘needing to make hard decisions’. It’s the reverse. Reducing support for the voiceless is the very easiest, most cowardly path he could have taken.

There's a reasonable case for the UK to increase defence spending, but not to pay for it by cutting public services. Keir Starmer promised an end to austerity. Today's announcement implies significant further cuts to departmental budgets, unless he raises taxes, or increases borrowing

As the once largest foreign investor in Russia, I can say with a hundred percent certainty that no American company should go anywhere near Russia unless they want to lose all their money and have their employees killed. That’s what happens there Mr. Witkoff
