Just one more rule bro

The purpose of the system is what it does. And what the planning system does is make it incredibly hard to build homes. This is what happens when you enshrine micromanagement into law.

The state government is watering down its housing reforms. @yimby.melbourne will release a full statement when we know all the details, but let's make one thing clear up front: these changes are a capitulation to wealthy incumbents, at the expense of Melburnians who want an affordable home.

aoc has got it: we dems have got to start delivering on the effective governance we are always talking about! www.liberalcurrents.com/the-crisis-o...

Man's out here complaining about smaller homes leading to "smaller lives" despite being a scholar of Kierkegaard—a man who lived quite well in the very sort of housing our professor believes makes lives worse. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosenbo...

12 Angry Men is really good up until the 30 minute rant about planning compliance

"Community" consultation is frequently weaponised against affordable housing. Something needs to change 👇

We can argue all day about windfall gains and open space contributions—but when it comes down to brass tacks, this is what sits at the absolute core of NIMBYism.

Supply-side policy is simple—it's the politics that's hard. Phenomenal reporting from Tom Crowley cuts through to the core of the housing crisis. I share the optimism of @BrendanCoates and @peter_tulip: I think that great change is around the corner.

“Iconic scrapyard” ????

Last night, Merri-bek Labor called in a Nightingale development, including 9 homes for at-risk women. The permit was approved, but only after Councillors fought it tooth and nail. The Labor Party has a solidarity problem. It's time we talked about it.🧵

1/ 🚨 The Labor Allan Government envisions Victoria as the Townhouse Capital of Australia—but Merri-bek Labor didn’t get the memo. Along with Sue Bolton, they’re seemingly pushing Victoria towards unaffordable housing and car dependency. Here’s what’s happening: 🧵👇

This is a good policy Owners of homes that have been unoccupied and unfurnished for more than one year, will see Council Tax double www.standard.co.uk/news/politic...

🚨urban economics research siren 🚨 A new (open access) paper considers the effects of upzonings in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. tldr - housing permits ⬆️ by ~10-18% - rents ⬇️by ~21% vs counterfactual These effects are for the metropolitan region. sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

NIMBY and anti-housing groups often rely on symbolic language. Greedy developers, luxury apartments, etc. But why do so many of them roll out the word "village"? The answer is surprisingly simple: these people don't really like cities. 🧵 https://buff.ly/4gUzvY2

It’s taken nearly 18 months of every mainstream news outlet, commentator and politician claiming traffic controllers somehow get paid $200,000+ a year for a journalist to actually see if it was even mathematically possible. And surprise surprise, “industry modelling” was basically made up.

Planning academics will recommend anything—literally anything—except building more homes.
